Your Most Recent Spyderco Acquisitions

The 15V models people are sleeping on and I'm not sure why. When they are gone, the are gone for good and will be much sought after. The way I understand it is that 15v will be gone forever now that Crucible is closed.

Maybe DeadboxHero DeadboxHero can give more details?

This is what I've been trying to tell folks elsewhere, because 15V is essentially THE topic of discussion and all the NKD posts in every Spyderco Facebook page I'm a member of. Folks who even think they might like to try some 15V had better snap up one of these (pick a model) before they're gone, otherwise you're either A. getting soaked on secondary or B. going without. And honestly, the 15V Native V Lightweight (which I just shared a post or two ago) was $158. I can only imagine what they'll be on Ebay when the last dealer sells out at street price. All the REX steels will be gone as well, and not coming back because the general consensus at the moment is that EraSteel won't be making it. Want some REX121? Better get it!

As a collector, apart from the Mules, I really don't chase blade steels but I am partial (for no good reason) to collecting knives made with M390 and to a lesser extent 20CV, which is essentially the same as M390, but I like just the "sound" of M390 better. LOL! ;)

Should have bought a MT 15V when it was released; wasn't paying attention but according to what I've read Larrin rates 15V about the same as ZMax which I have in an MT.

However, since you mention it, I may buy the Military 2 Sprint 15V just so that I have a 15V blade in my collection. I already have the Millie 2 CF S90V Sprint so it's not a reach to add the 15V Sprint too.

I can buy an Millie 2 MT 15V Sprint for 20% less than the $300 that EB scammers are asking for the MT 15V.

So, it makes sense to buy the Millie 2 15V Sprint instead at this point.

I don't think you'll regret it, my Military 2 in 15V has become one of my favorite knives in my collection. Large, sturdy, and laser sharp.

Thing is . . .

I've already got 9 Gen 1 & 2 Gen 2 Millies in my collection.

The Gen 2 15V would make a even dozen &, while I carry some, I don't "use" any of the knives in my collection. 🤷‍♂️

FWIW, although GIN-1 is the same as G-2 metallurgically, these different markings make knives so marked distinct from each other in appearance & also denote them chronologically -- those marked GIN-1 being earlier in production than those marked G-2.

So, for better or worse, this is why I make the distinction between these markings on vintage Spydies in my collection.🤷

Small correction, G-2 marked knives are earlier production than GIN-1 marked knives. G-2 was used from around 1992 to 1994, then changed to GIN-1 around 1994 until the switch to ATS-55 and/or VG-10. Before 1992 the steel was not marked.

Really? 🤨

Update: The quote of Sal posted below by @ryen apparently confirms this. Thanks for the clarification.

Realistically Magnamax will offer almost the same level of edge retention with the addition of the corrosion resistance.
And I predict a lot of Spyderco versions in Magnamax.

That said my military 2 in 15V is awesome :D

Hi Abiggs,

When we first began making knives in Japan (1981), we wanted the best steel that was available, which was Gingami 1. I wanted to put the name of the steel on the blade, but the maker said we couldn't because he had promised another company use of the name. Since we couldn't call in Gingami 1 or Gin 1, and we had to put something, so I put G2, a name I made up and we provided the steel composition with the knife when we sold it, because there was no American equivalent. G2 stood for "Good Sh*t also".

Years later, we had more horsepower than the previous company, so we could list GIN 1 on the blade.

More for those of us that know better 😂 Honestly though joking aside, after having gone through trying to grab the original trio of 15V releases (plus the mule), with this latest batch it's been nice just being able to grab one in stock without any hassle. I'm sure we'll get people who will complain later though, after 15V is gone for good, that they regret not getting one when they were easily obtainable. There was much more stock for each model this time around which is likely why they're still in stock, but the price increases over the past few years has likely been a factor too.

Things will be a lot different in sourcing MagnaMax than it was sourcing 15V & MagnaCut. Since it will be made in Europe with the higher costs there combined with tariffs, I suspect we will not see as much as we would hope.

Perhaps.
But I just received my first Magnamax blade and I'm in love :p

I just received notice that my MagnaMax order was delivered to my PO Box this morning. ☺️

Not going to bother posting pics of the MagnaMax blanks because those pics are available elsewhere &, except for the HIC, they all look the same as all other blanks, only the name of the blade steel printed on the blanks differs. 🤷‍♂️

I have also already received & delivery is still pending for a variety of other Spyders that I recently purchased.

Pics of those to follow.

I just received the following two G10 Police models to complete my collection of the G10 Police variations which are rarely seen.

First is the Police 2 SE ATS-55:

Next is the Police 3 SE VG-10:

And below is a pic of the collection of the G10 Police variations, which are from top to bottom:

1) Police 2 PE ATS-55
2) Police 2 SE ATS-55
3) Police 3 PE VG-10
4) Police 3 SE VG-10
5) Police 4 PE K390 (No SE variation)

These are all of the variations of the Police G10 that are listed on Spydiewiki C07 Police but please let me know if you know of any others.

It may not be immediately apparent from the pic but, in person, the increase in size from the Police 2 to the Police 4 is very obvious. My favorite in terms of size is the Police 2 but people with larger hands probably like the Police 3/4 better.

Now that I'm done with the G10, I'm going to start looking for the Police 2 PE & SE CF variations which are rarely seen.

The search never ends. LOL! ;)

Just noticed that this info was buried in SpydieWiki's extensive listing for the C07 Police that I never noticed until now, which reads as follows:

Generation 2

Around 1991-1994(?) the second generation of the C07 Police (P2) was introduced. The major modifications from the P1 are
  • the lock release position moved backward to mid-position,
  • beveled handles.
The G-2 stamp [6] on the blade was used from around 1992 to 1994. Prior to 1992 Spyderco knives were not marked with the steel used. In 1994, the steel remained the same, but the marking was changed to GIN-1, the name given by the steel's manufacturer.

A Boye dent was added in 2001.

From 1998 to 2001 variations with G-10 handles were available.

See: https://www.spydiewiki.com/index.php?title=C07_Police

--------------------------------------------------------------

And the quote posted above attributed to Sal further explains why the markings were changed "back" to the original GIN-1 designation in 1994.

It's things like this which make collecting Spydies often confusing for me & I presume for others, as well. 🤷‍♂️

This is the Spyderco Paysan that I received today. . .

I owned one before but sold it because it had a terrible lock stick. It dragged & was impossible to release cleanly.

Owned one before but sold it because it had a terrible lock stick problem; lock tab would drag & was almost impossible to release without extra effort.

Lock stick has always been a reported problem with this model. It is less of a problem with this one but it's still there; just a click & no drag. So, it's better the the other one I owned but it's the only all Ti framed Spyderco folder in my collection that has any lock stick at all.

Bought it back because I needed it to complete this group of all Ti framed Spyderco folders:

From to to bottom they are:

1) Paysan
2) Nirvana
3) Slysz Bowie CTS-CHP
4) Slysz Bowie M390
5) K2
6) Swayback
7) Advocate
8) SpydieChef

This group does not include some other all Ti framed Spyderco folders in my collection, including several Military & Mantra model variations, which I regard as different from this group.

Didn't feel strongly about buying it but was persuaded that I "should" buy something using 15V steel due to the bankruptcy of Crucible Industries that makes it but that doesn't mean that some other company might not buy the company &/or the rights to make 15V & other steels once owned by Crucible.

Nonetheless, I bought it & these are the 3 Military 2's now in my collection:

nhU5tV3.png

From top to bottom they are the:

1) Military 2 Black G10 PE S30V
2) Military 2 Sprint CF PE S90V
3) Military 2 Sprint Brown G10 PE 15V

I also own 9 Military 1's but that's another matter.
