My thinking is that before I spend a lot of money on really expensive brands, I find out what is my favorite configuration, knife size and such.
These set me back as much as I paid for one Case trapper, so I don't feel guilty if I break or scratch them.
Out of the box, the Chinese Oldtimer looks like it's the best made, a sturdy work knife. The Oldtimer Barlow I bought a few months ago has some blade-play now, so we'll see.
The Colt High carbon trapper was quite dull out of the box, but that will change quickly.
The Cattleman's has some finishing issues, but for the price it's allright and the fork-lock works fine.
The Rough Rider stockman feels a bit like a shiny toy, but the finish is good.

Found this on the Bay. A Solingen Boker with the Washboard Bone handles.
I have previously seen a few of these and really liked the jigged washboard pattern. I don't know the time frame for the production of this series but it seems fairly recent.
It came from a seller who did not know how to put together a good listing. I had to use a photo-editor to tell what the knife was and the condition. The seller did not even bother to add what was written on the knife to the description and the title of the listing.
OTOH it meant that I was able to pick up this little beauty for quite a good price.
