Reading in BF has given me an appreciation for the Lockback Whittler. Somewhere in here Ken Erickson has a thread showing the construction of this pattern and how challenging it is. And of course this year's Case/Bose Colab. is a very fine (and expensive) Lockback Whittler.
So, while surfin the Bay a few weeks ago i came across what looked to be a decent LB. Wh. I think the chat here in BF about this pattern made my fingers bid and i won; for $17.05.
I'm posting it because i am so amazed at how well put together it is. The blades all have smooth action as well as sharp edges. The locking mechanism passes the "Whack Test" and the release takes moderate pressure and feels smooth, no grittiness.

The only 'problem' with this knife is that it makes it harder to justify spending say 150 times as much(or more) for a full custom knife.

The GEC #09 pattern is a 2 7/8" Sleeveboard Pen which they have named "Esquire". With the milled liners and long swedge on the secondary it reminds me of the fine vintage Pen knives of 100 years ago. This picture does not capture the knife well at all. The grain of Snakewood handles give an appearance of depth when seen in person.

I like this knife a lot.

Here is another knife i was fortunate to acquire, just a hair under 2 7/8", engraved bolsters and mammoth ivory handles:

This Colt "buckshot bone" teardrop jack recently arrived, and I'm extremely happy with it! :p
I have a question, though. There appears to be some kind of red "gasket" between the covers and liners (the red is quite bright in person, but looks brown in these pics :(). Anyone know what that is or its purpose?

I think it got to do with brass being quite acidic . so its there to protect the bone . but don't quote me on it ;)

I knew it was gonna be strong, but I can barely pinch it open!
Hopefully it'll calm down after while. I'll be working it while I watch TV.

I left my Northwoods Forest Jack in the 2/3 open position for 5 days to lighten the pull. It's better, but I think it's still at an 8 or so.

Got this beast today, this has the strongest pull I've ever felt on a knife.

Some of the Northwoods can be severe nail breakers.
I got a Forest Jack before the Holidays and after cycling it with oil a few hundred times and leaving it open for a few weeks it is now a knife I can carry.
It is still a hard pull but nothing like when new.

These knives are beautiful and the fit and finish is spot on.
KSF has a winner with all these new Northwoods.

Thought I could hold off until the 77 barlows arrived, but I couldn't help myself - just received this one Friday...

Then my wife arrived home yesterday with this surprise...
