Your newest addition:traditionals of course!

Those were in his "junk drawer"???:eek::eek:

That’s what I was thinking. Makes me wonder what his “nice” knives are.

He had a bunch of old Western and Case knives from a collection he had bought at an estate sale. Many were well used (i.e., had been loved to death on a grinder) however, about six or seven were in as nice a condition as the two I bought. His big business is modern tactical's of the better brands (I saw Benchmade, Kershaw, and a few others I haven't heard of - Z.T. and ProTech). He also makes some nice fixed blades, that is his passion. He was about my age, mid-60's, and enjoyed having someone visit who liked to talk traditional knives. I got invited in to sit and talk awhile and invited to plunder in the toolbox drawers. I will go visit him again on the next show date, he was fun to talk with. OH

Just got this blue corn cob barlow in the mail today

My first Winchester Black Box. Cool pattern. Decent fit and finish. Pen has a very strong pull and the main is a solid 5. It is from 1987 and appeared to have the factory edge, which was obtuse and dull. I like it enough to have sharpened it and get it ready for use! It still has a bit of blade rap after sharpening, so I’ll have to close it carefully. The jigging is really nice on this one! The shield is very prominent; not sure if that is by design. I really like the spear and the pointed butt. A fine knife for the price and age.

That is a gorgeous knife. :)
I have the coffin jack, same beautiful bone, also from '87, with 5 pull on the main, and a pen like a baby alligator.

My recent knife acquisitions (Wright's spear/pen, Boker 492 Barlow) have much stronger pulls on the secondary pen blades. I just opened the pen on the coffin jack, and for the first time ever, I didn't find the pull excessive. Hmm.
I had decided that I could never really carry and use that knife. :( So I never did sharpen it.

It's good to be wrong.:thumbsup::D

Nice! It took me longer than usual to get these blades into good shape. I really need to get an 800 grit stone to make the material come off faster when the original stock is thicker behind the edge. But it got there eventually. Now it is beautiful and dangerous!

I recommend the 150/180 "Lobster" (Naniwa abrasives mfg co). a fine Japanese water stone, with a name that inspires confidence, or at least a smile.

Every time I use mine, I am glad I bought it. It's great for establishing new sharpening bevels, and repairing dings.

You can go straight to your 1000 from the lobster.

Thanks! I’ll look that one up. I’ve been using the better King stones, but I’ve only heard good things about naniwa

Ironbut Ironbut You sure got a lot of good out of your old one! The Clip blade looks like it is sized for the main in an 834UH, the Sheepfoot looks like a Lambsfoot, and the Spey looks like a Pen - BUT, it looks like it is still functional and worthy of use. Very Nice! OH
Ps mighty nice new knife too.

I retired it because the tip of the main clip blade rode above the liners, and the main blade was getting wobbly. I paid $16 for it in a truck stop, and it was the most I had ever paid for a knife. I've picked up "a few" stockmans since then, so it's not like I didn't have anything to carry. I just thought it'd be nice to have a "new" one just like it.

After say I need to give an Opinel a try in a try in a comment @btb01 reached out to me requesting my adress. Well yesterday evening I check my mailbox and found a package, containing not one but two new Opinels! A no.6 and a no.8 I was immediately impressed by the super thin grind. I carried both to work today and now I see why they're so popular. These things cut like a lightsaber  Anyways here's a pic to show off another example of the fine characters that hang about the porch:cool::thumbsup:

Thanks again Barrett, these will be much used and appreciated :)

My wife ordered me a Whiskey Bone CV Peanut for my birthday. It's here. I was super excited when I opened the box because it is a beautiful little knife. On closer inspection, there are gaps between the springs that you can see through. No biggie. But the springs are weak. Dangerously weak.

And the blades are bent. :( Not crooked, creating rub. Each blade is bent to one side. The bend is the only thing stopping them from rubbing. I don't know whether to send it back for a replacement or try and warranty it. I called Case just after 11, and it went straight to voice-mail.

That's a real downer especially as it's a present:thumbsdown: If the springs are weak and all that rub it's intolerable, the dealer should replace that for you ASAP.
Hoping you get a proper decent one:cool:
