This one showed up in the mail today, was in way worse shape than the pictures from the big auction site led me to believe. Got it walking and talking again, some of the rust scrubbed off and the blade wells cleaned out so the tips of the blades won't poke me.

This is just stage one, I think I may play around with this for a summer project knife

I'd be interested to know if you can get a very sharp edge on that big knife, and then how well it held up when you used it.

Well, I'll report back after I've had a chance to put it through its paces, but I can say that the steel is extremely hard. Took me almost an hour last night to get the edge back, and now it's screamin', hair-poppin' sharp. Seems like really good carbon steel, upon my first impression.

I'm thinking the point is the point on that one.

I dunno about all that... The blade shape is an age-old utility pattern, and is fully flat-ground. Most pointy-sticker-types, in my experience, are more slender/narrow, with a much more obtuse primary grind, like a stiletto or misericord. I think this one is designed as an actual cutting tool -- especially with such hard steel.
But, again, its edge holding properties remain to be seen. Time (and use) will tell.

Thanks, SH. I really don't have much to go on, since it's completely unmarked, but... I know that they certainly don't make 'em like this any more, that's for sure. A chunk of ebony that size, in & of itself, indicates to me that this piece has some age to it. And the properties of the steel -- the hardness of the carbon steel blade, the thickness/robustness of the carbon steel saddle spring -- are characteristics that give me the feeling that this is an oldie. But, that's all I've got, just a feeling.

I have received a bunch of knives over the last few weeks. Here are a few of them.
Top; 15 in blood orange bone, 92 in snakewood, thanks Jon, and an 85 in black micarta.

K-bar Dog Head, Queen in feathered buffalo horn, and Opinel in Olive wood.

I picked up a CRKT classic congress today . it's the first knife i have had from this company . the bone looks fantastic . but the blades wouldn't cut butter when it's hot . and the bolsters came scratch and this is a new knife out of the box . half an hour of sharpening gave me a descent edge . and some buffing with some brasso to bring up the bolsters and its good to go . this wasn't an expensive knife the prices are about the same as rough rider .but as for fit and Finnish straight out of the box rough riders are better ..
