Your Top 5 production survival knives!

From what I currently have:

Busse SFNO
RAT3
RAT7
Ranger RD7
SR RatManDu

Soon to add:
BRKT Bravo1
I expect it to make the list, but you never know until you actually try it yourself.

I'll cheat and add one folder: the Strider SnG

We should included a running price total of all the knives. That would have been interesting.

Don't need a prybar. Let's see.

Machete - 20
Fiskars - 30?
Mora - 11
Good SAK - say Huntsman - 25

That adds up to $86. You're saying I couldn't assemble a collection for $860 that doesn't have twice the functionality? Do you *really* want to say that?

List the 5 you would pick for your $860 and let's look.

Superknife 2
Leatherman Wave or Charge TTi
Busse BATAC
Swamp Rat Howling Rat
Swamp Rat Camp Tramp

List the 5 you would pick for your $860 and let's look.

This could be fun. Ok, here's one such list:

Category 1
SAK Huntsman or Farmer - say $30
Case or Queen Stockman - $30

Category 2
Spyderco Caly 3 in VG10 - $80
Benchmade Mini Grip in D2 - $80
Buck 110 420 HC - $35
Buck 110 Alaskan in S30V - $70

Category 3
Gossman Nessmuck - $200 ish
Dozier K2 - $260
Dozier Delta Traveller - $260
Fehrman PeaceMaker - $200

Category 4
Busse SH E/BM E - $350 - 400
SR Camp Tramp - $200
CS Trailmaster - $100 - 200
HI BAS - $130

Ok, pick one from each and you are there. Here's what I would do - and do do ;).

SAK in front pocket, Caly clipped to other front pocket. All my small knife needs are met right there with redundancy. Moving up, Dozier K2. That's it for a small hike, for more, then a Trailmaster goes on the pack. I would put any of the knives in Category 3 up against the Mora, and any of the Category 4 against a hatchet, at pretty much the same weight.

What I generally do is add a stockman or sak to the sheath of a cat 4, and lash it on the pack. Now I have redundancy both on my person and on my pack.

If you are a small knife and baton loving type, then forget category 4. I would argue this does give you more than twice the functionality, easily. Using the HI and Dozier choices, you won't even get close to $860.

Here's my same list with cost per piece and total.

Becker BK-7 ($39.50 ebay)
Eriksson M2K ($12.50 ebay)
BRKT North Star ($104.00 retailer)
Eriksson Mora 711G ($11.50 ebay)
Victorinox OH Bundeswehr Trekker ($30.00 ebay)

Total: $197.50 + shipping

I couldn't spend $860 on knives and not be PO'd at myself for not buying another levergun :p .

hey scott, think you could talk about some of your choices?

hey scott, think you could talk about some of your choices?

I prefer big knives over hatchets. Carbon steel is always my first choice. I own all of these listed. Even though I prefer a convex grind, the flat grind is my second pic. Other then BRK&T and Falkniven, convex ground production knives are hard to find so flat grinds are what I look for in a large knife. The other one I forgot to mention is the new Browning Crowell/Barker comp knife. The best production big blade I own. 1084 steel, full flat grind, convexed edge. Takes a beating and comes back for more. All my production blades get reprofiled with a convex edge. The Cold Steel knives are wicked reprofiled.
The SAK and Leathermans are multi function and the Case is a time tested winner with dual blade capability. The only other folder for me would be the Buck 110.

With my setup of a BK7, a Kabar 7" utility, my Marine Raider Bowie, my Clipper, and my Wave, I ring up at just a bit over $200. That gives me a couple of medium-light choppers/utility blades, 1 heavy chopper/draw knife/baton target, 1 very good woodworking knife, and lastly a tool with a fine edge, serrated edge, saw blade, and 2 sided file to sharpen the rest, & pliers to pull the zombie teeth out of my leg. I guess I am honestly struggling with your definition of "functionality", because with your choice of any of the knives you listed, I just don't see any way for you to get literally twice the function of even the other guys original list, much less mine with my super high dollar Ontario beater, LOL. Somewhat better blades, steels, etc. but to say that what you picked will out function these 2 to 1 is a long stretch.

That said, I would gladly walk into the fray with any of the blades you listed, just not with the same outlook on their respective performance.

Not in any particular order: CS Master Hunter, Roselli erapuukko, Marble's Campcraft, original Blackjack Campanion in 1095, F1.
