Your top fixed blade battle knives?

Pardon the thumb... This has been on my belt for the last month. Bark River Wilderness Explorer with a few mods. It's a modern equivalent of the knife my grandfather carried in combat.

Of those I still have, I'd take

1. CS Bowie Machete
2. CS Gladius Machete
3. Ontario Spax
4. Traditional Filipino machete
5. KaBar Parangatang

But any of these would also be quite capable...some of them are no longer with me though :(

If I had time to choose a blade I would grab my Busse Tglb. Otherwise I'd be fine with a big kitchen knife.

I know its not black coated or have a skull stencilled on it...so it couldn't possibly work...but I'd probably go with this

In the last 100 years or so, the humble kitchen knife, like this one, or one of many similar to it, has been used more often in defense, offense or intimidation than all other knives put together (in the USA). No scientific proof, just pure speculation on my part, based on police reports, anecdotal tales from LEOs, government statistics and quotes in the newspapers :D) because it is ubiquitous. It is THE most used weapon in (US) domestic violence situations.

I would agree with that.

That design is what the sandbar Bowie looked like, and it was a fighting knife.

If I were to do something stupid like go into battle with a knife it will have a rifle attached to it.

I would venture to guess that this is 100% true. Everybody has a kitchen knife.

I'd also be willing to guess that's why .22 caliber guns kill more people every year than every other round. Everybody's got one.

Also true.

Hey, all the knives shown in this thread are cool looking and stuff...I covet many of them....but all the tactical design elements don't make them any more effective than a chef's knife.

Heck, I'll bet the 2nd most widely used and effective "battle" knife is the grocery store steak knife.

I bet you're right! #3 would probably be box cutters.

Good point. They might be #2! And deservedly so. It will open somebody up infinitely better than some 1/4 inch thick urban digi camo coated thing with a skull bead fob on it.

Nothing wrong with a 1/4 inch thick urban digi camo coated thing with a skull bead fob on it...they are fun. Its just that chef's knives, boxcutters, and cheap steak knives have put way more hurt on way more people than the the rest of the knife world combined.

Its why people who hurt people outside of combat use them. They work very, very well.

My guess too on both the knife and the caliber. But I would still prefer my Randall Model 16 over just about any kitchen knife if I had a choice.

Fantastic choice.

I'm not sure why people ignore certain kitchen knives as budget defensive blades. They are designed to cut flesh efficiently, and are better choices than many "tactical" knives.

Thank you.

Marketing.

Yeah. The Old Hickory Boning Knife doesn't sound nearly as uber-cool to a mall-ninja wanna-be as does the venerable "Betcherbutt Zombie/Ghoul War Sword". Plus Old Hickory just absolutely refuses to put a zombie green, blood-stain resistant coating on their blades. And they only come with a flimsy cardboard sleeve instead of a nylon/kydex/leather/stainless steel, uber-hybrid sheath. :D
