Your Very First Fiddleback

Is that the original Nessmuk? I just picked up my 2nd Fiddleback and it happens to be a Nessmuk :)

Andy , the 'muk you got was really nice! It wasn't until I actually held mine in hand did I appreciate how brilliant of a knife it was. Enjoy

Yeah I really like the blue lacewood on that. Surprised no one else wanted it, but that because the other knives are also just as nice.

Anyone else have a 'first fiddleback' to share?

Finally got some pants on for my first bushfinger!

No, he's not. He quit doing custom work quite a while ago according to his email list.

Oh I didn't know that. I saw from an older post that he made a pretty nice sheath for a bushfinger so I figure I'd see if he was willing to make one for me as well. Turns out he did! I know he's been busy with his own stuff too. His work is also amazing.

I pretty sure he stopped making custom blades by request. He makes his knives and offers them via his email list. I think he still does sheaths though. His work is awesome.

Azhu, make sure you glue that square ring closed, or at least, tighten it down everytime you wear it. I've had mine come apart (through lack of paying attention) and hit the deck. Luckily, it hit the pavement so I heard it fall and not a soft pile of dirt or leaves out in mountains.

Good idea Joe. I'll use some locktite so that it won't unscrew itself from wobbling. Last thing I want is to come home without a knife on my belt...

So anyone else picked up their very first fiddleback lately? Want to hear your thoughts/impressions :)

Hi everyone,

I've been enjoying this thread, and thought I'd share my own story. My first fiddleback was..........only partially a fiddleback! Let me explain. I first learned of Andy's work in late 2009, just after he became a full time maker. What caught my eye (and still does today) is his Nessie. The Nessmuk is my all-time favorite blade shape, and Andy's interpretation of the nessie, remains my favorite to this day. So back in late 09, or early 2010 I was determined to get my hands on one. However, back then, I was also into doing my own handles and "assembling" knives. Luckily, this was back when Andy was still accepting custom orders, and he agreed to do a Nessie blade blank for me. Below are some pics of what became of it.

Now, I'm not a professional and I know that this doesn't hold a candle to what Andy does. I'm also sure it will be down right blasphemous to some, seeing a non-professional handle on a Fiddleback blank! However, I had a great time doing it, and it remains my favorite "assembled" knife to date. Also, despite the blocky/chunky appearance, it fits my hand like a glove and is unbelievably comfortable. It rests in a Paul long sheath. Anyway, hope you enjoy. Easy with the criticism! :) Ha

Great Story! Thank you for sharing!!!! That is a beautiful knife and beautiful blade profile!

Posted before, but this was my first Fiddleback. Andy was patient as I went back and forth on handle options, and finally decided on bocote over blackwood with a red liner. I hadn't realised when I ordered it that he had switched from full-height to sabre grinds on the Woodsman, so the profile was a bit thicker than I'd anticipated (it's from 0.215" stock O1), but it makes a good blade for heavy use, and I pair it with the small thin sheepsfoot in the photos for finer slicing.
