ZDP-189 Lum Chinese folder.

a lum chinese folder is on my list at the minute so a sprint run would definatly be on my list to get
and zdp-189 would make it all the more desirable but black handle i dont know
wouldnt be my choice but if that was the color that was released i would still get one

I'd be happy with green, black or steel blue ... heck anything's pretty much okay -- but I'd rather have it as a framelock than a liner lock. :)

The problem with any modification to the handle - other than colour - is that it requires a complete re-engineering and re-design of the handle and lock. This means bringing Bob Lum back in, and putting the folder back into the development line of the fifty projects that Spyderco is working on simultaneously. Big project, longer production delays, etc.

Anything is possible of course, with enough customer interest.

If you don't like black almite, what colour would you prefer?

All very true.

However, if there was one factor holding the earlier model back from further sales, it was the liner lock (and the fact that some won't buy one). Every other thing I've ever heard about the Lum Chinese has been positive (except for people who hate the color green ;) ).

Your points are well taken. I wouldn't blame Spyderco a bit if they didn't want to go through the hassle of making it a framelock. But I'd buy one for sure if they did. :D

If not black almite (which would get my vote), then plain brushed metal.
Any other colour risks having as many people dislike it as like it.

I like the sound of a sprint run Chinese Folder. Make it plain aluminum, then I can glue some maplewood to the sides. :)
Black is fine with me.

Blades

I kind of like the leafy green color it has now. Maybe even a little brighter would be good.

The Lum was a great knife except for three problems I considered major:

1) The interior handle edges where left sharp so if you gripped the knife and any flesh against the interior edges felt like it was going to be cut.

2) It was too smooth any the hand would slip easily, either the finish needed to change or there needed to be finger cutouts or something similar.

3) One the one I had it developed a small amount of blade play that was difficult to adjust out. Either it need a better/thicker liner, or a different lock.

How about a jade green or a cinnabar red color for the scales. That would certainly be in keeping with the Chinese theme.

Oh, and BTW, I just ordered a ZDP-189 Calypso, so I will soon have some idea of how I like the steel.

Could someone link to a discussion of how it is made? Is it a CPM type steel that it can have 3% carbon in it? By rights that ought to be cast iron.

Spyderco needs a very high end knife. This one would do nicely.
Ti CRK type frame lock, front scale in ti or Micarta,189 blade steel.
If not this how about a G10 with 189 steel.

I'm in, no matter what color or texture the scales are, just put in the ZDP-189! ;)

G-10, G-10, G-10!!!!!! :D :D :D

I like my Chinese, but I'm not a big fan of aluminium. In fact, I hate it. Make the updated one in G-10 or CF :foot: and I'm in.

G-10 would be my vote. Not a big fan of slick-handled knives. Anything grippy. Color's not a big issue- like the cinnabar idea.
