Zombie Tools knives Quality

mr serious is vewwwy sewious. :grumpy:

Exactly, I wonder if Mr.Sewious also despises Emerson Knives? After all, most of them are called "Close Quarter Combat" something or other. How "real world" is that? Most of us will carry them because we think they look cool and we'll use them to cut the occaisonal loose thread.
And speaking of cool, I think the Zombie line looks exactly that. It seems Kabar is even supplying black handle scales in case the green ones start to wear on you. My only beef are the sheaths. It sounds like they'll be similiar to the ones being sold with their 'pig sticker'? knives [I've forgotten the correct name] Those sheaths are just too sloppy looking for my tastes. Hopefully some kydex sheath maker will start offering decent sheaths for them in the near future.

Not really thrilled by the Aluminum slabs they use for the handles, but they don't seem to be of poor quality. If I were to order something from them I would send them a block of Micarta or G-10 to make the handle slabs from. They definitely have the appearance that they are trying to draw a "certain crowd". 5160 and made in the USA sounds pretty good to me, but I would want to see some cutting demonstrations before I purchase.

This is one of the owners with one of their swords...

Come on dude.

I am not knocking Zombie Tools for their design. Actually I am not knocking them at all. But to compare them to Emerson is a bit ridiculous.

I like 'em. I'll pick one up @ The Blade Show unless I pick one up before. Kinda hesitant though until I get a feel for them. The BK9 is probably gonna be my next fixed blade. Dont have alot of fixed blades other than 2 ka-bars. Guess i'll continue my trend....and then again I may stray and pick up a Busee.:p

My advice on this is that ZombieTools does not currently offer anything that approaches the practical utility and value of the BK9. Busse offerings are in another category altogether, and I cant even think of a Busse/kin model that closely compares to the BK9. In this category, personally I would get an ESEE Junglas.

I'm not digging the attitude some of you roll in here with.
The name is to draw attention. Do they likely get business from total nerds sitting in their parents' basements? Of course they do, as does Busse, Swamp Rat, Scrap Yard, Kabar, any of your sword manufacturers, any company that makes machetes, any company that makes knives at all really will attract some of those people.
But you know what? Why do you roll in here and bitch out the company because some of the clientelle is odd, or nerdy, or clueless? That's the kind of argument a disarmament type rolls in with, that "oh you don't need those why do you own them?". I can confirm the product is good, I've handled and used some of it and it is quite legit.
Remember, I can call an M16 a paintball gun, I can call it a rose. It is still an M16. It still works, and is still lethal.
And really, why do you care why those guys buy their knives? I guarantee every sane man who has ever owned something cool like that fantasizes about using it to its greatest potential. Skiers dream about those incredible steeps in deep powder on custom planks, car enthusiasts want to take a sports car out to the race track and try going a few hundred miles an hour. every gun guy thinks about using that rifle in the safe (which probably never fired a shot in anger, and never will) kicking doors or shooting zombies or dueling it out with a sniper at some ungodly distance.
You need to embrace the teenage boy in you when you handle your gear to a degree, or else the gear is only worth as much as the tasks it can accomplish, and in my mind if I invest a lot of money in something, I am well within my rights to enjoy it as more than an easy way to accomplish tasks.
YMMV

Voted the f**k up!!!!!!! Preach on, bro!!!

By the way, I personally own two of thier models, the Vakra and the Deuce. I have been thinking of doing a review for you guys. Until then, know that they are very solidly constructed and well heat treated and tempered. You can actually use them in extreme ways without damage or destruction to the product.

Please do! I actually found this thread by searching BF for "Vakra". Definitely interested in its practicality. Did you opt out of the acid etching or ask for different handles? If not, how's the aluminum+leather treating you? Have you taken it out and used it in the field, etc?

A couple of other things I wondered was why they said it was thinner than the standard Nepalese kukri, which is usually about 1/4" (which this is), and what it was constructed of. As far as I'm aware, the ad copy for all the other blades made sure to mention it was made out of 5160 steel, but the Vakra omits that. It'd be easy to email them and ask, but if you own it you may already know that.

toor,

1. The Vakra is 5160.
2. I have a modern Nepalese Kukri, and the spine is thicker than the Vakra. I have not measured them, but I will do so tomorrow for you. I have to bring my calipers home from work.
3. Emails to ZombieTools are usually answered promptly. Correspondance with them has been excellent.
4. I bought my ZT's before they offered the leather handle wrap option. In fact, I didn't even know they were offering that on certain models. They have made som changes for 2011, it seems. I think the leather would be very welcome. The handles are good, but a little on the slim side. The aluminum slabs are grippy, so no troubles there. I think I will wrap my handles like they now do because it looks cool and functional.
5. I let them do the acid etching, because hey...they are the artists...it's thier creation not mine. I also spoke to them about doing custom etching but at the time of purchase, they were not set up to take custom requests. They did a little custom kydex work though, just a shoulder strap for the Deuce. Needs work in that area.
6. I've used them for a little stress relief...but honestly, they are a more blade than I need for a "normal" camping outing.
7. They are fun and I'm glad that I bought them.

They are great. They are not the garbage Kbar or Kershaw put out for $20.
There are never going to be any zombies, and I think the name hurts the company. Zombie Tools sounds like it puts out crap but nothing could be farther from the truth. I own a Reaver Cleaver and it its both beautiful and functional (my only complaint is its a bit heavy). The material is perfect because it will take a shock or hit without breaking like a brittle steel would.
The people who get ready for Zombies may be delusional (or just having fun) but they WILL be prepared if a real disaster strikes, like a natural disaster or civil unrest.
These are serious tools and worth the money. If you want to see how tough they are go to YouTube and type in Zombie Tools. Skalangrim (sp) has put out some amazing videos testing the blades (in fact, his test is what sold me on the Reaver Cleaver). I don't believe in zombies but I know a real, tough, weapon when I see one. These are the real deal.

Kabar's "zombie" knives are nowhere near close to $20, if you can find one for that price, BUY it, cause it won't happen again. They use 1095 which is certainly comparable to the 5160 of the Zombie Tools blades, and frankly, I prefer their handles(and they even give you the option of swapping to plain black if you don't want the neon green).

For that matter, only a fool would call Kershaw's $20 knives garbage, though yes, they won't be on par with higher end stuff.

Also, prior to your post, the last post in this thread was from 2011...what made you decide to bring it back from the dead?
