If people cannot have a reasonable discussion without taking cheap shots and throwing insults, then please don't post.

Pretty sure that was directed at me Anderson. Sometimes the negativity around this place pulls you to the same level.

I think it's just best I avoid threads like this until the atmosphere improves.

Luckily there are alternatives where people are expected to behave with a modicum of decorum.

@ evilgreg

What happens on other forums really doesn't matter here. Sometimes we are able to work together to prevent scammers and thieves from preying on the community as a whole but when it comes to rules and "codes of conduct", dragging cross-forum drama around usually results in problems. Here in this thread we have detractors and defenders colliding. We don't have a written rule about cross-forum nonsense but it is something we avoid whenever possible. We don't need or want it.

Message received. I think the whole thing is pretty silly, but I don't want to stir up any unnecessary trouble (beyond the usual "arguing about knives on the Internet" variety, of course).

Forget I ever mentioned it, I won't mention it again.

And that's why we have moderators here.

Yes but all they seem to do is close threads. That gets rid of the symptom, but doesn't cure the disease. Also, it sort of makes it hard to actually *use* the forum for what I assume was its intended purpose - discussing knives, the knife trade, etc.

That probably sounds ungrateful. I don't mean it that way - I am very grateful for this forum and those who spend their time to help out. I just feel like sometimes it's more effort to participate here than it needs to be. It's really not pleasant to start a discussion and then have a couple of bad apples crap on it, and then have the mods close it down. This happens time after time.

This thread is about the 0454. Let's get back on topic.

I am genuinely curious about the oft-cited Russian supply of 0454s. It makes sense that there would have been such a supply, but I've never seen anything besides hearsay on the subject. Can someone post a link to information published by KAI or instructions on how one could find such information? Are there links to Russian knife shops that sold these, or do they mostly run B&M operations over there?

Jarrod, I feel like that's information that creeps into the territory that KAI has established where they no longer reveal exactly how many of whatever LE run were actually made, or are in the wild. About the only way you can really tell is by how high the serial numbers go, and even then, that's suspect because it'd be all too easy for KAI to simply skip a few hundred. Make four hundred knives, the first two hundred have serial numbers 1-200, and the second half of the run have serials 500-600, or it could be 800-1000, or any combination thereof. Only KAI knows for sure, and I find it doubtful that you'll be able to find anywhere where there'll be a clearly stated "There were XXX number of 454's made." by Thomas, or anyone else.

You won't find it. People said there were only 272 made (when in fact that was just the usa/Canada allotment), then people started reporting serial numbers in the low 400s and people got upset. No one ever considered that the home country of the manufacturer would get some. Especially knowing how well does in that market considering they were the only ones to get the 0777bw.

Understood, and yes maybe that's exactly why we don't easily find public statements on it from KAI. However, I'm not really all that concerned about having an accurate number on the size of the LE, just curious to know when, where, and at what price points it has been offered and subsequently traded. If that leads to an estimate of the edition size that would just be a bonus.

Make friends with a Russian knife nut?

I'd sell my soul for an 0454bw :D

Are there any Russian knife forums? I'd join one and go "undercover" using google translate to find out if there are other editions of the 0454!:p

I guess they figured people in the USA didn't really need to know about how many were shipped other places. Besides, they don't give out production totals, so it's kind of a moot point. The knives there won't affect the value of the ones here, trading and selling between here and Russia is kind of a hassle. As to the 454, it's a sweet piece, I'll have to take pictures of my serial #008 ;)
