ZT kills off 4 models

That's all you got?
Nope. For $300 I should have female collars on the other side of the screw not having it going straight into the titanium scale. Also being DLC only and having a billboard on your pocketclip isn't key to success either.

Lack of Sharpening Choil
Lack of Internal Milling
Overpriced
Gaudy Pivot
Carter for LHTP Carry instead
Etc.

I agree with the sharpening choil, so I added one to my own blade.

By the "gaudy pivot," I presume you mean the "USA MADE" on the presentation side. Yes, that doesn't look good to me, either. I might sand mine off and blue it.

I don't know what you mean by lack of internal milling or the "Carter" issue.

But all in all, I love this knife. It flips like a dream on bearings. Mine closes under its own weight. Rock solid. No blade play. It uses premium materials throughout, from the really nice carbon fiber scale to the CTS 204P powder steel. The ergos and blade geometry are awesome for an EDC. The blade has a high saber grind, with edge shoulders just 0.0235 inches wide. A nice pointy point for detail work.

Other than a few minor, mostly cosmetic issues, it's a great knife from my perspective. Carries light and works hard. Absolutely love this knife.

I mean crater not Carter. Sorry. Pretty sure the 0804 doesn't have any internal milling to reduce the weight. Not saying it has horrible materials. It has great mertaisl it just needed some more refinement at the price point it was being asked more.

ZT like others regularly discontinues knives and like others sometimes brings them back. The biggest indicator of discontinuation is lack of continued sales as usually indicated by dealer/customer demand. Dealers are the ones ending up with unsold stock so manufacturers give them incentive to move the discontinued product.

Some knives get discontinued more than others. ZT has a very finite production capacity in Oregon. If a knife isn't selling it's time to move it aside so that the production capacity could be freed up for better sellers.

As for the reasons for a particular knife being discontinued sooner than "perceived" there could be several. For example, the oft-cited ZT 0804CF. It was the first ZT regular production model with a $280 street price (MAP)! For that price it had titanium frame lock, bearings flipper, machined titanium clip, CF presentation side, premium CTS-204P steel and Ionbond DLC coating on blade and titanium. Some thought it too much in price for a regular production ZT. Apparently, some had issues with the lock going to 100%. For such a big blade it only weighed 5 ounces. I did not like the USA MADE logo on the pivot and the clip cavity on the presentation side. Some did not like the tight clip. Of course, they should've optioned a non-DLC version. ZT has a habit of over-brandishing.

I got a new one for 200 and it has better lock up than my old one. (0804cf) It's very well made and has an elegant feel. Nice thick carbon fiber, big pointy sharp blade. Very light and precise. None of the mentioned criticisms bother me at all, for 200.

That's a good absolute/relative statement.

However, would it bother you if you paid $280 instead of $200 for the ZT 0804CF and if so why?

The 0804 was getting a bit pricey at 280, but I never had near that in either of mine. Is the knife worth 280? Yes, in my opinion considering what other comparable brands sell for, but ZT has tended to be a bang for buck deal in the past, making 280 seem high .

I received my 0804cf today and was disappointed to find that it is CPM 20CV instead of the advertised CTS 204P. I know they are in the same class and all, but I wanted to try CTS 204P, which was a major reason I ordered the knife.

Think my disappointment is justified?

not justified. they choose based on availability, they are all equal and you will not see any difference. if you want, you can trade someone who has a 204p. you can talk to the vendor to see if they would swap one based off of what there page said. but its really no big deal.

Yeah, I emailed the vendor to see if they have any 204P. Maybe they will swap.

I need an 0562 handle with a 3.5" 0566 blade shape in whatever steel ZT wants to make it in...stat!

909 and 804CF, two of the best they have ever made. If I had the money I would sure get a spare model of these! May try to sell my 392 to get a spare. Boy, I hate to see these go. They both fit my hand perfect.

Would like to try a 2nd gen steel. Plus, it seems almost everything I have is Crucible, wanted to try a different maker.
Gotcha, I do the same thing. For me, I just enjoy having the various steels just in case a benefit of one over the other pops up in practice. However, from all reports I read, 204p, 20cv, and M390 are identical in use. I do have the 0562 in 20cv and would snap up another one if they released it in M390.

And if you ordered that second one for M390, and got 20CV instead, you might be a little bummed, right?

You're with me though, I can tell

While the 0801 carries surprisingly well for its weight, the 0900 carries even better. Yes, the flipper tab REALLY sticks out, but given that its short length stays well above the bottom of my pocket, it hasn't been an issue. The 0900 is a bit thick to be a good slicer, but it's fine for other EDC stuff.

I love me some 0801, but it's always been a bit big for me to EDC (YMMV). Honestly, the biggest reason I like the 0900 is BECAUSE of it's stubby overbuilt-for-size silliness. It ALWAYS puts a smile on my face, which is justification enough. It's hard for me to resist picking up a spare.

Hmm, you make a strong case. Seeing them side by side makes them look like a good pair (main and off hand carry?)

My 0801 has a slightly shorter blade than normal after I chipped the tip and the factory sharpened it out. That led me to have the blade reground by an aftermarket modder (Razor Edge Knives) in order to mitigate thickness behind the edge. I also asked them to add in a sharpening choil which I like a lot. It's still not at 0909 levels of compactness and the handle is still full-sized. Well, we'll see how long the sale prices last and if disposable income coincides with availability.
