ZT Limited Edition 0999

Taken from a thread where someone barged into his forum and posted a "Spydercos are fugly" thread.

I think it sums it up. Sal is a classy guy.

The difference is, Spyderco's "ugly" knives usually look odd because they perform a specific function. A carbon fiber inlay in a blade does not perform a function other than appealing to a person's sense of aesthetics. That said, these ZT knives do an excellent job of highlighting their ability to produce intricate designs that push the boundaries of what production knives can be. I think that ability to produce finely tuned knives, with advanced knife technology, carries over to their regular production models, and improves their function overall, but I do not see much functional improvement in some of the limited editions. I have been wrong before though, and just looking at all these pics prompted me to pick up an 0392 and 0900 recently.

looks good but the scales look a little overbuilt... would have to handle one to know for sure though!

Goofy and over the top knife. Absurd pricing. Very disconcerting to see how ZT has fallen from their no-nonsense, utilitarian designs to...well, this.

That being said, it's partially genius...

Can't blame them for capitalizing financially on the idiocy and fanboyism that plagues this LE nonsense.

And the 0999 performs a specific function: It was produced to highlight the production capabilities of a premier design and manufacturing company at the world's largest knife show.

It is a showpiece. ZT's peers in the knife manufacturing business voted this knife the Knife of the Year in 2015.

It amazes me that a group of so-called knife people can't find anything to like about a knife that obviously was a huge undertaking in all facets of knife making, as well as being well thought of by people who actually know what knife production really means.

Paraphrasing Mr. Glesser - all eye and no heart.

Such is the loss of class that the internet has brought.

That is not directed at you, jstn. You chose a couple great examples to pick up - the 392 is a really great EDC, and the 900 is a solid little knife, both of them made with top-quality materials and are design collaborations from respected custom knife makers.

Lots to like in the ZT world if people could just stop looking down their noses at knives they have not even (and probably will never) handle in real life.

They went from hard use tactical to art deco.

ZT has not given up on tough production knives in all sizes from 2.75" to 4.1". They also produce Sprint Runs of these (12 of them just in the past 4 months).

The pure Limited Editions / Factory Customs are a different category to highlight specific collaborations (design and parts), manufacturing, materials, parts, designs, etc. and not that they are not tough.

So, you have regular production, Sprint Runs of these and Limited Editions (including Factory Customs).

So....if people don't like it, that must mean they don't have class, and here's a quote from Sal that somehow makes your opinion a fact. Got it.

P.S. I am one of those who got to handle this knife for as long as I wanted (which wasn't long) at Blade 15. Not a fan.

I'm with you. Ugly. Guess that opinion on the aesthetics of that knife makes us both classless, heartless internet monkeys. :D

At least we are lucky enough to have members looking down their noses at us and telling us so, or we might not know!

Maybe your taking this to seriously MQQN, I respect your knife knowledge and enjoy your posts, but this are opinions, and they come in every shape and size

The opinion does not make you classless, the delivery does.

Which ZT was it you like again?

No, not at all. You sound very closed minded on this.

What I am saying is simply you can have constructive criticism without being a rude jerk. Maybe a few of you cannot. And when you cannot do something in a gentlemanly or classy manner, you lack class. It's not that hard to understand.

I have made this analogy before: Would you tell someone that their baby is ugly? Many of you probably would, and I stand by my statement, that is classless.

People work hard to make the knives that are brought out. The only reason some of these people crap all over ZT threads is because the know or suspect there are no moderators that will take them to task for their trolling.

Case in point...
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1449601-Manufacturer-Rep-Mods

If you can't have any manner of class in your online dealings, don't get butthurt when someone calls you out on it. Live it and love it, it's all you.

While I like many production ZTs, especially the 0808, I find nothing attractive about this 0999. Actually, I haven't liked any of the recent LEs. I'm sure they're very well-built, but they're gaudy.

Thanks Knave. I understand all knives aren't going to appeal to all users. Many people thought the colors on the RJ Martin were gaudy as well, and I can see people thinking that, particularly with the over-saturated pictures that were floating about.

That knife is a wonderful cutter, as are the 392s -

I liked the first 392 (plain ti and blue) and the BRZ, and the BWGOLD - those were the only ones I tried to buy.

Hmm... I never saw the first 392, but plain titanium and blue sounds nice. I'd like to see more of that. [emoji106]

Not the best - but fairly representative -

Here's the thing with the Factory Customs apart from the fact that we know that parts are made by known custom makers.

Once you start making the same cookie cutter with different colors it dilutes the line. This was specially true of the 0392 series. Instead of coming up very many blade shapes in the Hinderer arsenal they opted for fewer blade shapes and a multitude of "unpleasing" color schemes.

  • 0392
  • 0392BWBRZ
  • 0392BRNGLD
  • 0392BLKGRN
  • 0392WC
  • 0392PURBLKWC

It seems like I am alone on this, but I actually quite like the varied color schemes of the 0392 line. The handle is simple and just works because of the great ergos. To me, this is the best design ZT has put out to EDC, with the 0562 coming in close 2nd. As for diluting the line, I am happy it has brought the secondary prices down. I hope to see a plainer, production version of the 0606. I think that would be a huge hit for ZT. I also want more variants of the 0392 line.

Not that one.

If you are going to continue tossing insults whenever someone is asked for their opinion and it turns out to be negative, or even worse, Scagel forbid, differs from your classy, hearfelt, open minded opinion, then maybe its time to rethink your ability to participate in a forum where ideas are exchanged.

This isnt a ZT fan subforum, its General. Its within the rules to expess a negative opinion when asked for it. It's not within the rules to insult other members.

That knife is butt ugly.

There's a bit of irony in those ZT Hinderers, they started as a more accessible version of a Hinderer for the common man back when a real Hinderer was more hard to come by and much more expensive. Now it seems to have switched. Real Hinderers are all over the place for comparatively modest prices and the ZT LE's are hard to come by and secondary prices are crazy for a ZT.
