Owch that's rough man, but not destroyed. You can fix that with ease. Still a bummer though, must have been one hell of a zip tie.

That sucks. Sorry dude. :(

You do realize that zip ties (especially the big, heavier ones) are one of the worst possible things to cut with your knife, short of something like a cinder block, right? Many of us have learned that the hard way over the years.

Did it chip out, or is it rolled? Either way, it is repairable. Fix it/get it fixed, and carry on having learned a lesson.

Why are zip ties so bad to cut?

The only sharpening device I have is a sharp maker. I'm guessing this job is way too much for it? Might have to send it off for a krein treatment

THe Sharpmaker can handle it. I have done worse and fixed on sharpmaker. It'll take some time though.

I wish I knew and could say for sure. All I can say is there is a lot of empirical evidence here of this kind of thing happening when cutting zip ties with knives (search BF for plenty of 'em). I used to do it too, but stopped using knives to cut zip ties when I messed up the edge of an older Endura pretty badly.

I cut those twist things with wire in them with my 0560 yesterday with no damage. Glad I didn't run into one of those zipties

zip ties? are u refering to cable tie? those you see on tv where cops tie up a suspect's hands behind instead of using hand cuff? these ate made of nylon and not particularly hard although tough.

Ty-raps are tough! Some of them can hold a lot of weight & force. Usually the black ones are rated for more extreme temperatures and they will be even tougher and less brittle than the white-ish/clear ones. I use these as an electrician for bundling certian types of cables and they won't break off in my lifetime. If it was more of a heavy duty like the ones we use I can see it damaging the edge like that.

At work I wouldn't bother using a knife to cut a zip tie but rather use a plier-cutter.

But of course you won't always have these with you.... slightly sucks that it wore off the edge, but it should be fine with a little bit of sharpening!

Did you actually try to cut through the zip tie or did you just hook the zip tie and pull up until it broke?

Yep panduit strap/zip ties are tough.

I've broken teeth off serrated 440a knives trying to cut zip ties. I've also sliced through them with a esee 3 in 1095, with no issues. Kinda surprised what it did to that elmax. Can we see a pic of the offending zip tie? Thanks in advance.

I'd like to know the details... I've been looking at this blade for a while and I find it hard to believe that a $260 knife is going to perform worse than any knife I have ever used in my life. A plastic zip tie did that? I've never had a knife that couldn't handle a plastic zip tie. To be honest, it looks like you were trying to cut it like a pair of wire cutters(short damaged area instead of longer dull spot) instead slicing it like a knife is designed to be used. If that's not the case, then I apologize. I would NEVER buy a knife that couldn't handle cutting a plastic zip tie. I laughed out loud when I read zip ties being one of the worst things to cut... I use to use a Leek at work to cut heavy duty plastic strapping(far worse than zip ties...) all the time. Sure it would dull, but the edge never rolled and it certainly didn't chip...
