ZT0801; A quiet success?

Sorry to bump an old thread but I can't make up my mind between the 0801 or the 0560BW. My father is out here visiting me for about another week and his birthday is today and I'm thinking of picking him up one as a late gift. I showed him videos earlier in the week of both trying to get his opinion but he seemed to like both. He is police officer and will actually carry and use it.

The 0801 seems more pocket friendly but I really love the look of the 0560BW. I'm probably going to get myself a matching knife whatever I grab for him. Now that the 0801 has been out a while does anyone have any thoughts on it compared to the 0560? Any suggestions or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

There is a rather large size difference between the 0801 and 0560. That would really be the deciding factor for most. The 0560BW looks AWESOME but only if the size doesn't turn you off.

Personally, ZT 0801 over ZT 0560BW. Flipper action is much better and it's more compact. Just as tough as the 0550. Ideally, he'd handle both if possible for look and feel.

I am pretty sure it's a great knife: please do not get me wrong. I just do not like it shape: it's on an ugly side from my personal point of view. For each his own I guess.

From someone who does not own a ZT yet (I like smaller knives) but greatly admires their designs, I lately have been confused by the bewildering array of ZTs being released. It is hard to keep track of them all.

ZT obviously is business-savvy, so I guess they know what they are doing. My suggestion would be to slow down the pace a bit and let the consumers digest each line more fully. And to make at least one 3" blade gents folder :)

great knife, but it's missing jimping. I look forward to getting my 0600.

No, but a self-proclaimed internet metallurgist made a Youtube video disparaging it, so Elmax must be defective (insert sarcasm here).

I beg you. Please. don't bring this up. Let a sleeping dog lie. Keep the horse in the dirt. Just let it die...

I think the 0770CF is going to be pretty small, not sure if it's 3" though

I have been beating up a 801 for the past few weeks and it has held up amazingly well. I am used to using a knife for a few days of maybe a week then I need to either sharpen if or at the very least touch it up. However I haven't done anything to the edge of my 801, I love this steel. I didn't expect much from the 801 but agreed to buy it anyway now it is one of my top 5 favorite knives. But if you end up buying the 560bw thats also a great choice I am also a big fan of that series. Comes down to size and comfort in your hand. Save the hassle and buy both

Both 0770CF and 0566 have a blade length of 3.25" which is fine. You still need some 3" folders for places like L.A. where the blade length limit is 3".

Kai: Any chance on getting a couple of the new ZT's and maybe a few of the older ones (0550, 0561) held at the front desk so people who are in the area can stop by and play with them? :-)

edit: how different is the pocket clip on the 0801 from the cryo?

I ordered the 0801 for my father and I. Thanks for the input.

Just an update. We received our 0801s and couldn't be happier. I liked it so much that I ordered the 0560BW and am currently waiting for that to come in the mail. I'll post some pics of both of them together when it comes in.

Just pulled the trigger on the 0801 to get some pocket time along with the 0600....My only complaint is lack of jimping. At least put Rexford Singularity jimping on the spine...IMO.

Aside from that, has anyone hard used their 0801? How are the ergos?

Thanks

As far as I can tell (it's been a while since I've had the Cryo in hand), the 0801 clip (which I think is the same one on the 0770 and 0566) is overall slightly bigger. I think it's a little longer and maybe a little wider. Someone might correct me on that. The style is definitely the same though.

I've found that when I carry the 0801 tip up, the way the knife is designed causes a little bit of the handle to stick out. Just a smidge though.

The hardest thing I've done with it was briefly attempt to cut some roots out of the ground. The ergos were nice - nothing particularly stood out. When just fondling it, it feels good. That swell towards the back of the handle does a good job of filling the palm. The pocket clip sorta kinda sticks in the palm, but that's only if you're purposefully nitpicking for ergo issues

The rounded rear of the handle along with the raised portion fits perfectly in my hand, allowing my forefinger to slide up to the bottom guard, and my thumb fits perfectly on the back of the blade allowing a great slicing motion. I just wish it was a tad bit thicker, but it is still great as is. Really looking forward to the carbon fiber insert version!
