120th Anniversary BK98 Becker Tuko

keep in mind, everyone who is kvetching about the price -- pretty much ANY custom shop knife run is likely to start at the same point and go up from there.
Kabar was possibly too nice with the BK20 & 29 by tossing in freebies.

indeed. the price is entirely fair, given the materials, sheath, and handles... pretty much any maker of a quality knife with these materials charges at least this. people begged for a premium steel, then they get it, then they complain. seriously? derp :D

i ordered mine via phone, and when talking to the very nice Christie, she assured me that counter is "somewhat wrong" and they had a "few" left ;) but they are selling well, so...
Well they have “somewhat” around around 54 left then...

Couldn’t agree more. Just bad timing on my part, money wise. I would expect sprint runs on any Becker product using this steel to be in this price range, and would shell out the cash if I had it. Maybe it’s just that’s it’s a kitchen knife, and for some reason, I don’t spend that kind of money in the kitchen. An outdoors knife, however...

y'all wanted a BK15 in exotic materials? semi-custom?

here's one

more than $200

i don't see a single soul complaining about the price of that one

I don’t think that is an apples to apples comparison since the 98 is more of a production knife, though limited it is. The 98 is priced a little high in my opinion, but not out of line with someone like Spyderco with a similar product. First model out of a new custom shop with this steel and features....I’m not complaining!

Good point. That Bark River is one purdy knife. I didnt know they made that style. Temptation begins.

I think people people are used to the excellent value Becker knives provide so its difficult to mentally align outselves to that pricepoint.

I'm gone for a bit, and something new drops.

The BK98 is a very good looking blade, and with Ethans prowess in the kitchen, I'll assume that it functions great in the role of a camp kitchen knife. Also, it is great to see a before design in a different steel, and with all of the other accessories already thrown in. Speaking of, the bone linen micarta looks great. I wonder if they're any thicker than the normal micarta scales, to compensate for the thinner stock thickness, because that would be a great addition to the lineup, for those wanting to add more girth to their tweeners.

I recognize that for what you get, the BK98 is a decent/competitive value, but overall, it's too rich for my blood. That, and I've never found that I really click with small santokus. I seem to like the ones >7in or so.

Now, if kabar decides to pump out a sprint run of 1/8in thick stock, cpm3v bk16's from the custom shop, for a similarly competitive price point for those materials? I'd be very interested in that, if only because I've nearly had a custom like that commissioned twice, so I've clearly been willing to spend the cash there.

Anyway, glad to see that Ethan is still designing great knives, and that other beckerheads are getting something that they've clearly been asking for (this looks like it will be wayyyy better at kitchen duties than the BK15). However for myself, I'll pass on this one.

What y’all think about the sheath? Any thoughts as to why it is shaped and designed like it is? I don’t recall seeing one like it before.

Looks like finger grooves. I dont think that It was made to be worn on the hip. But made to be laid on the counter top or picnic table. Pick it up and sheath the blade and unsheath the blade. Just my thoughts.

Is there a thread announcing its release, lol? Or some other opportunity for comment?

I, for one, was not even aware of the existence of that knife... but, if it's any consolation, I won't be buying that one, either.
People commenting on the price, or even including it as a reason for not purchasing, is not necessarily a complaint. I know I wasn't complaining when I made my initial comment. If the Tuko was in satin 1095, at a price of $125, I might have ended up with one just to have it...but it would have been the same struggle I had when I finally purchased a Camillus BK10. I don't like the BK10, so I'd passed on many good deals that I'd seen. Finally grabbed one only because it was Camillus; but I've never experienced a moment of joy in owning it. I got a pretty good deal on that knife; and I still consider it a poor decision that I wouldn't repeat today - and not because of how much it cost.

at the end of the day, you want it, or you don't, buy it for an investment, hoard it, flip it...

really not sure what i want any more, so who am i to judge what others do?

I’d like to have one, but at the price I’d need extra “knife money”. Which, at the moment, I don’t have.
Good work Ethan, Ka-Bar, and Custom Shop. It’s a nice looking knife.
Hope you guys ditch the limited runs and add a few more to regular lineup.
