1st Spydie ever

Great choice for EDC! It's durable, light, a great design, and very high quality. I love it.
I have been hearing those same comments from many great folks in the Spyderco community. If I could figure how to posts pics, I probably start a new thread. Lol like a proud new pappa

UPDATE, Persistence is back home with papa. Enough said. And....... Caly 3.5 arrives tomorrow or Saturday. Wohoooooooo! OK so I guess it wasn't enough said

Today something unusual is happening at Casa Murphy...... a Spyderco Persistence is being delivered. Not that a knife delivery has never happened, many times Kershaws, Benchmades, Microtechs, and a Strider has been brought by the dude in brown, but today a Spyderco arrives. I am so excited I can hardly stand myself. I am new to this forum, but have an extensive background in, let's say, edc knives. I am a retired police officer of many years. I carried all of the above knives, somewhere tucked away on my person, and never worried about price verses quality. Well retirement means no more autos and it also means a budget! It was so much easier explaining a $500.00 knife purchase as "needed duty equipment". After all honey you want me to be safe... dontcha? Now I research to find the best bang for my buck. I have been edc a Kershaw cryo 1555ti and have to admit I really dig it except it is a little heavy. So a friend, also retired LEO, recommended the Persistence. I did my research and could not find a flaw for the money. After today, I'm afraid all will change and I will be lurking round here explaining why I need more Spydies. I have a feeling I'm screwed. If any of you have any recommendations, I think I'm already looking for my next, even before the first has seen my hand.

Hi Murf,
All 3 of the "budget-contious" series are IMO probably win the "Best knife for under $50 category" hands down! (actually, prolly the best under $100- Their only competion in this category, (again...IMO) is OTHER Spyderco's, i.e. the new Endura, Delicas w/ FFG, & VG-10 in various colors-ta boot!). A friend, also a knife-knut, pointed out that the Resilience is the "Poor Man's (Spydie) Military model". I own all 3 of these "China-Co's" & am amazed by their fit, finish, & even the 8cr13mov must have a VERY good heat-treat, I convex/polish all my knives...(Herro-knife Preeple!lol) & these 3 models (like all Spydies) ALL get scary-sharp & seem to hold it pretty damn well! Although, (full-disclosure), I am a retired butcher & commercial fisherman & cannot ABIDE a dull knife! So, I run all my knives (that have been EDCed) across a strop, 5 or 6 strokes per side, every 2-3 days, to maintain edge-so they never get a chance to really dull. I would, literally, not be terribly concerned if I was told that I had to shave my face with any of these knives. Welcome to the wonderful world of "Spyderco addiction", remember, "the FIRST step....is admitting that you have a problem, the second step? Is figuring out how to hide it, &/or justify the need for another, to the spouse!". I suggest your next one...& there WILL be "a next one-FYI lol, you should try one of the Enduras or Delicas I mentioned, they are both going for less than $75 currently, with Full-flat grind & VG-10 & they ROCK! (or ZDP-189 versions as well)....update:congratulatory::saturn::encouragement::encouragement: once you have had a chance to carry/use for awhile....cheers!

The caly 3.5 has some of the best ergonomics of any spyderco knife IMO. Fairly thin blade that makes a great edc and slicer. The knife carries really small for the amount of blade it gives you too. I hate to tell you this so soon after your first two purchases but you are going to have to buy a paramilitary 2 at some point. :)

You will also need:

Military
Yojimbo 2
Pacific Salt or Salt 1 in serrated edge
Dragonfly 2
Gayle Bradley folder
Chaparral
Sage

Ummm, the list goes on...and on. Enjoy your new knives for now. Theres plenty of time. ;)

Dont forget: Native, Manix II lightweight, Civilian/Matriarch, not to mention; the Temperance, Fred Perrin's Street Bowie & Street-beat, & also the Bill Moran's! (if you are into smaller sized EDC fixed-blades.).LoL....yupp, murf...you are screwed! Welcome to the club my friend!

I knew that the minute I open the box of the Persistence. I have a caly 3.5 vg-10 g-10 being delivered tomorrow or the next day. Yep screwed

I know already looking at a PM2. As far as posting a video, I am the Sargent who threw a fit when they put a computer in my cruiser. Screwed me up so badly, I had to retire😂

Murf,
FYI- the Resilience (big brother to your Persistance) has been called "Poor-mans Millie". It is heavier than the Millie, & obviously cannot approach the overall quality, as Millie is Golden CO made, but, for $40 +/-....it is bullet-proof & a steal!

I have a private question, but the server would not let me pm you??? Probably not enough clout here yet. At your convenience could you email me at w.todd.murphy@gmail.com I would appreciate it.

My first Spyderco knife ever takes me all the way back to 1995. I was at a Gun Show here in KC and I had seen many of Spyderco's blade up till that point. Then one of the dealers more or less dared me to try one of Spyderco's great serrated blades. I took the dare and I bought a GIN-1 SE Mariner model with a stainless handle. I had that knife for several years and traded it about 5 or so years ago. But it wasn't long after that I nailed down a JD Smith model and a few others.

I came to like the stainless Rescue better than a I did the Mariner so I switched off over the years. Spyderco has really evolved a superior product line since then and are now my favorite commercial knife company.

My first fixed blade was the Temperance 1 model and I still have and still use both of them by the way ( PE & SE). I do wish that some day they will cave in and bring back that great model in H-1 blade steel.

No joy yet on my Caly 3.5. I'm not sure about this new fedex express post. Should have been here. Amazon site says out for delivery on time by 8, but according to Amazon rep postal service should have delivered it, fedex just brings it to local USPS and then they deliver like mail. Mail person came at noon and no caly. 😥😥😥😥

Don't order from Amazon. Always takes forever. Its worth the extra couple $ to order from Knifeworks or BladeHQ.

Caly 3.5 arrived today. Amazing blade. Buttery smooth, solid lockup, blade dead centered perfectly. G-10 good quality and grippy. VG10 sharp as a razor. Ergonomics amazing!

Carries like a dream, slim and deep. Disappears in my pocket. Amazing quality. The g-10 difference between it and my Persistence is light years. Persistence is drawered for a while

Congrats its a lovely knife! I do t have one in my collection right now but will probably get one down the line.

The Caly 3.5 is about my favorite Spyderco. Well that and the Para 2. When I prefer the knife to be discrete, I take the Caly, otherwise it's the Para 2. I used to have the Super Blue version, but the G10 grip developed a crack. I sent it back to Spyderco for repair/replacement and they kept it so they could do an autopsy, I guess. Anyway I got credit for the full retail price, but sadly there were no more Super Blue Caly 3.5s left at Spyderco. Now I have the CF ZDP-189 version. I like it a lot, but still miss that SB model.
