2008 Knifemakers Christmas Gift Exchange! (2nd Annual)

I have mine done. It is 1095 with black/blue G10 (looks all black until you get it out into the sun) brass bolsters pins and thong hole. kind of a take off on the old sharp finger but bigger and its not a trailing point. 9" overall 4" from plung to tip. Heat treat by me. Sheath by me.

Now thats a nice working knife i'm a big fan of dropped handles it makes it so much easier to skin a big game animal imho.

I don't have the patience for handfiling. Mine is getting a slightly hollowish grind because I'm working it with a stone grinder.

It turned out LOADS better than my first attempt. It won't be up to the masterpieces that I see displayed here every now and then but I think it's pretty damn nice anyway.

It's not quite done yet, still trying to decide whether to patina/age the blade and I still have the sheath to make. I have to wait for the materials to get in for the sheath. I have something a little special in mind for that part of the gift as well.

I got mine today, I haven't seen it yet as I am waiting for Christmas, but my family says it is really nice!

I finished mine but then now I can't find my eyelet setting tool to finish the kydex sheath.

Looks like there are now a couple more blades that I can hope to find under the tree. Great job SDS and Erik

Still working. Time has been an issue, I should have it done by next weekend so it should arrive before x-mas.

I have the bevels filed and hand sanded to 400, now I need to heat treat and hopefully it will be down hill from there. The hand sanding is the one part of knife making that I hate. I hear people talking about how they like to do it and it is really funny, I do not mind or really kind of enjoy hand filing the blade bevels but not the sanding part. Anyway I will be cutting it close but I will make it.

I heat treated my knife yesterday... but i think I'm going to re-heat treat it tonight when i get home, picking up some furnace cement on the way home so i can try to get a hamon on it. Then again, i'm behind schedual anyways, since i wanted to get the handle finished this last weekend, so maybe i should just leave the heat treat alone and get cracking on the handle.... argh ! The curse of being a slow worker. I dont want to send out anything other than my best, but I also want to make sure the person my knife is going to gets it in a reasonable time frame too!

The handle is glued shaped and down to at least 320 grit. Along the way I accidentally figured
out the (a?) way to do super glue grain filling :)

So, a bunch more finish work on the handle, touch up and sharpening the blade, then ...
the dreaded first attempt to make a sheath...

Mine's done, still debating on posting pics, not much of a photographer as you guys have seen. Sheath is most of the way done. Should be dropping it in the mail by tomorrow. It'll be like sending one of my kids to college, lol, I'm not that eager to let it go, I really hope the recipient likes it as much as I did. FYI: It was tested by my grandmother in cutting a super transluscent thin slice off a ripe tomato. :)

Got mine in the mail today, and gonna ship mine out at the end of the week so it will reach the recipient by christmas. just gotta finish the sheath...
