2008 Knifemakers Christmas Gift Exchange! (2nd Annual)

Just need to sharpen and finish the sheath on mine. My knife was a number of firsts for me. First forged knife completed, first hidden tang, first guard fitted. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out and need to fight the urge to point out all the flaws to everyone who sees it. I know a fellow knifemaker won't miss any of them, but I hope he likes it anyway. I am pretty excited and look forward to the mail every day.

I know how you feel. I'm almost done with mine and itś my second. It has so many flaws that I feel like I could do nothing but point them out all day. Just finished attatching the scales. Just need to rough shape them and finish the sheath (got some nice 4mm leather for it) and I'll be ready to ship it out on tuesday or so. That way it might even still get there in time.

and +1 on the starting earlier next year...

Not too many of us have near perfect knives for our early work, and I am still in that stage. Also, the spirit of this is more of giving and of having a fun challenge. Plus, getting a knife from the people that we talk to on the forums is also very fun whether the knife is from someone just starting out or it is from someone who has been at it for several years.

WOOO HOOO I should be done this weekend LOL
Ok now I jinxed it I better just keep workin on it.

I cant wait to see what the person thinks

I need to make a sheath for the one I sent out. I have had a full plate here as some know and I wanted the knife to make it so it went off over a week ago. So to the guy who has mine you will be getting a sheath.

Jim

I've got mine finished...it'll go out today or Monday!!

P.S. no, I didn't take the picture in the future, my stupid communist camera screws the date up on occasion. Come to think of it, it's always that date. I wonder if it's an omen...

Here's mine. No sheath yet. My first recurve. My first attempt at a ball handle (need to work on that a bit more).

Beautiful knife Shawn! Nice shape, clean lines and sweet handle/bolster choice.

I received my gift knife and I lucked out. I won't yet say who I got mine from (helps everyone's suspense) but, interestingly we had each others name. Photo of the knife is in this thread. Came with a nice letter from a great guy and a excellent craftsman. Jim

Packing mine tonite. Goes in the mail tomorrow. Someone ought to have it by end ofg the week.

ARGH, so at what point should I email the person who is going to be the recipient of my knife and let them know it's probably going to be late? >_< ? The knife blade is done and finished to final grit, the handle is finished and polished... but the guard is driving me nucking futz, it's just not coming out right. I've spent all day and made 3 guards, none of which are quite right. The most recent is almost there, but the #@#%@#% hole in the middle got filed a little bit too much to one side and there's a gap just big enough that it'll look like poo when i solder the guard on.

I was planning on having the epoxy drying and having it all together by the end of tonight, but it looks like I'm gin to be taking a few more days in the shop to get this right, so it's probably not getting shipped out in time to arrive for x-mas. For the new year, sure, but I swear I've never had this much trouble with fitting a guard before.

Now you all know why I did my knife in September and let it sit for a couple of months to "age" gracefully... :p

USPS Express Mail is delivered even on Christmas day.......

Justin I always have a gap but I close it in my hydraulic press. It works every time. It does tend to deform the guard but its easy to face the front and back on the flat plate. Hope this helps.
