2009 Forum Knife - getting started on ideas.

A jack or barlow 3 1/2" ish with a clip or wharnie main blade and a smaller pen secondary
Or any combo like that

If it it is too big I will not carry it.

Carbon or D2 not SS

Do not want to pay for stag.
What about wood, ebony, or micra?

I'm afraid stag would likely be a deal breaker for me. Just can't justify the expense these days.

The cost is naught compared to how ugly it is. I really don't get the group's fascination with stag. Jigged bone is so much more pleasing to the hand and eye as far as I am concerned. But that is the risk you take when doing it as a group. The Tyranny of Democracy and all that.

I'll likely buy whatever is finally settled on. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing that Barlow idea coming to fruition. I think sawcut bone and BF on the bolster would be pretty neat. Since it's going to be a production knife D2 or 1095 works for me. I generally like ATS-34, CPM154 or other premium stainless steel for a custom slipjoint.

I'm not too certain that the idea of a bolster stamp or tang stamp, etc. would be very affordable. If a die is required you're probably looking at somewhere around five hundred dollars just to have it produced. The same goes for custom shields, it's cost effective if you're running a custom line of knives through your store, but not for a small run of fifty or so knives. I can find out what's out there though and let you know.

Stag being ugly isn't the problem for me. The problem is inconsistency from one knife to another. Some of this year's forum knives had beautiful stag. In my case (#33) the stag is the most lackluster I've seen on a knife in this price range. Nothing like I've seen on any other Northwoods knives. Rough Rider and Steel Warrior Stag usually looks nicer than the stag on my forum knife. If it wasn't for lots of burnt in the burnt stag you would guess it was very uneven light tan bone. They also managed to burn(overheat) the tips of two blades when they were grinding the edge on a belt sander, but that's a separate issue.

I think jigged bone would probably offer a higher degree of consistency and quality control in the handle material for all 50+ knives.

My #1 vote goes to a 3 5/8" - 3 3/4" Whanrncliffe Swayback Jack in jigged bone or micarta with 1095 blades.
My #2 vote goes to a Saw Cut Bone Barlow with 1095 blades.

Just for the record, I don't want anyone connecting my lack of enthusiasm for my forum knife with Ed T's effort. ED worked his arse off and did a great job coordinating and distributing the knives.

Any chance of maybe a Rogers bone clone patern for the scales?I like the barlow idea or maybe a damascus peanut.

Another couple that haven't been mentioned:
- a coffin jack with spear main and pen secondary blades
- a two-bladed congress

Just to add a couple personal favorites.

And as Ken E mentioned, jigged micarta is awesome!
Seen here on one of his swayback jacks (which would also be a great choice in a production version):

a few words from experience here, while we are considering the possibilities....

The 2008 BladeForums Traditional knife was a stag handled popular sized pattern that sold for less than $100.00 delivered.....

We had a hard time getting 50 people to commit to this...when the rubber met the road...sure there were hard charging, numerous posting members that loudly spoke of the carbon steel traditional and in stag from Northwoods...you could hear the crickets chirp...luckily, you have enough Forumites that DID commit and would double up, should it have been required in order to produce this run....

My suggestions for the next run are such:

1. Make it a VERY popular pattern.

2. Keep the handle materials simple....jigged bone is a good and traditional material, and very inexpensive.....it would seem like a good idea.

3. As much as you guys love carbon steel, it rusts....D2 would be my recommendation at a minimum....more popular steel...FORUMWIDE.

4. If a Forumite commited to a 2008 knife, and backed out, they should not be able to opt in for a 2009 model(unless this is handled privately with the organizer of the 2009 BladeForums Traditional model, and approved). I say this not from a punitive perspective, but simply one of administrative efficiency, and clarity.

I think this is the way to go. I know for me money will be a big determination wether or not I can get in on one. I still think the Copperhead would fill the request that have been made for size and such. And can be had with a single blade if wanted. But no one commented on my last mention of it so I guess I am wrong. That's OK. I am use to it. I am married. LOL

How about something like this?
100_0008_edited-1.jpg

Im quite fond of the pattern. I also have a weakness for long draws. :D

I'm in regardless - but I'm not a great fan of the barlow design. Swayback yes. I'd like to see one that is extremely thin - more pocket friendly. D2 is a great idea. Bone is fine. Say maybe 3.25 to 3.5 inches closed. Pocket friendly design (thin) is my suggestion...

I missed the 2006 version, but the last three were:

2006: A ring opener from Canal Street in A2 and Stag

2007: Canittler (Canoe/Whittler) from Canal Street in D2 and Mammoth Ivory

2008: Medium Stockman in 1095 and Stag

Thanks!

Wow... wish I hadn't missed out on 2007...

Although a Sunfish is a neat knife, I've never found it that practical to use. Everyone loves wharny blades and everyone loves to cut things. Why don't we go for a Wharncliffe Splitback Whittler. Have a little coping and pen blade for the secondaries.

A Scout knife would be great, but I'm likely in regardless of design. I'm embarassed to say that I do not own a barlow or swayback so I'd be in. Someone posted a lockback whittler that I've been drooling over also.

I am 100% with you. Pocket friendly makes it useful for collectors and users alike.

I love that lockback whittler. Think Tony could whip out about fifty of them by the end of the year?;)

I like the splitback whittler if we can bring it in on a budget. Well, I'd like it better on a budget, but I'd go for one anyway.

Some great ideas and we always seem to have a little fun coming up with our choice.

Let's keep em coming and then we can start a decision thread in a week or two once the discussion here starts fading.
We can just run a list of 2 or 3 of the most popular suggestions and go from there.

Ya know, none of our knives so far came in bone or micarta, maybe it is time.

Ken, Heartfelt thanks for offering to help us out. It is very much appreciated and depending on the decision of the group, I may come a knockin. ;)

That jigged micarta swayback looks fantastic.

I am in for whatever we decide. A barlow or jack would also be a cool knife. Your dogleg pattern is one of my favorites from this year of knives I have seen.
