2011 Forum Knife Picture/Review Thread

Well, mine arrived finally. This is amazing knife and being my first GEC I am very impressed. Indeed the caplifter has its issues but it's not detract anything from this unique knife. Thanks a lot to this year committee , GEC and everyone who made this knife happen.

Great knife indeed, the knife arrived with a friend of mine who is located in the US, so no karma needed. He brought me bunch of knives so a lot of photography work ahead of me. I believe I'll post photos of old ones, some nice peanuts and the forum knife of course within few days.

I've modified the cuplifter on my knife, using diamond files just to add little bit more leverage to the lifter, now I open every bottle in first try.

I have to be honest, I was a little back and forth about this knife when I got it. I loved the handles and the f&f, but wasn't really big on the broad spearpoint. It is the first knife I have that has this blade shape. After a quick sharpening, and a few days of pocket time, I've grown to really love it.

7 days till I get mine!!! :D I have some root beer I'll crack open with Christmas dinner.

It'll be worth the wait! (frankly, I sort of envy your anticipation... waiting is hard, but it makes it that more sweet when you get it!)

It's been hard! especially seeing everyone elses lovely looking knives posted up. I'm going to give it my undivided attention for some time me thinks :D

Yeah Rob...I think that you will appreciate this beauty even more having to wait for all this time...and you wont be dissapointed as you know! :)

I did get a hell of a shock the other day, I havent carried my 2011 E/O for a few days, had it stashed away as I do, as I have been carrying some lovely old knives with me...and shock horror!!...rust settled in already in a space of just a few days!, I always oil the joints, but in this case I didnt oil the main blade, as I always carry just a smear over the blade if there is excess coming out of the joint once oiled.
So out came my 0000 grade steel wool and my 3in1 oil...and took it back...still has left scars though :grumpy:
fyi the knives were inside folded newspaper tucked under a shelf, New Zealand or should I say Auckland can have fairly humid weather...sometimes on the radio you here it getting in the 90's for percentage of humidity, hence me ripping through oil like no-ones business

You need to get a patina going on that baby! ;) I had the same issue when I lived in Brisbane...I just used my carbon blades for all sorts of food prep to "help" the patina along.

Duncan - Paper absorbs moisture and anything stored in it is prone to rust. Get yourself a fishing tackle box and line it with tool box drawer liner.

Plano fishing tackle storage box. The "tool box" drawer liner is impervious to all oils, solvents, etc..

I've never had anything rust in a box set up this way.

Hi Ed...it was only a temporary thing, meant to be overnight...but you have great idea...I will look into that...thank you very much for the idea

I could do with a bit of that humidity. Our winters in Scandinavia are cold and dry (this year no snow yet, unheard of!) with powerful heating indoors, humidity goes under 20%. Good for the blades but a monster for stag, wood and bone, many shrink back. Looking at Ed's tackle box suggestion, I need the opposite: a cigar humidor:thumbup:

The 11 knife is not yet showing shrinking, but then, it gets sloshed with beer and cider so that keeps its humidity up:D

Run a humidifier in your home, it really helps...you should bust out some Mead to slosh on the handle ;)

Willgoy: No need for a cigar humidor. It is really cold and dry here where I live too. When I first received my 2011 forum knife almost a month ago, the bone scales lined up almost perfectly with the side scales on all edges. Then as weeks past by, I noticed shrinkage had occured. Just this weekend, I soaked the knife with food grade mineral oil for 12 hours and the result was amazing!

I reprofiled the blade on Wicked Edge to a 34 degree inclusive, added a nice patina by slicing lemons, then stropped it with Lee Valley green compound and it is now scary sharp! Plus soaking it in mineral oil really helped by adding an extra layer of protection. Man, I love this knife!

...

I think that is the last one....I guess Peter may still be waiting on customs...

It's here - I nearly got nervous :D

this is a beautiful knife with great F&F - absolutely nothing to complain about!
Thanks a lot again to all that did make this happen!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hi Peter -

With no disrespect for all of the other wonderful pictures in this thread, your picture captures the knife and specifically that "out of the tube" experience beautifully.

I can smell the machine oil.

May I use your picture in the giveaway thread?
