2011 mini knife KITH

I'll try that dremel cone, I think I even have one. That is a much better idea than the 3/4" fluted bit I used, lol.

Darn it, I don't want an extension. Now I have to procrastinate for another month!

Nice knife, Ryan. Did you thin the 5/32" down or leave it that thick. I decided that I could scale down a design, but the thickness would just be ridiculously thin if kept at scale. My 1:8 scale knife wold be 1/64" thick! I left it a little under 1/16".

Zaph... Well quit procrastinating damnit! haha

No I did not thin it down, It is thick when looking at the spine or edge. I would have rather used 1/8 but I didn't have any on hand so I used what I had. I didn't want to use brass either, but that is what I had. Just Get er Done (no I am not really a cable guy fan!)

Great...an extension...Now Ryan is going to make 4253 more to see which he likes the best :P Actually not upset, i have been busting ass on the PIF knife and hope to have that finished tonight. Now i can focus on what i am trying to do with this as opposed to saying, well it has to be done. Now i will finish the few i have ready to go :)

Haha... Mike I am on some other projects and have a busy week ahead of me. So maybe only 4242 more! I am really looking forward to seeing your PIF and KITH photos!

Thanks Dan! I used 5 min. Epoxy instead of acraglas, and pins just like my full size knives. Here is an in hand photo. I had a lot of fun on this one.

HOLY MOLY Buddy!! After our emails, I came to see your Mini KITH knife and I am blown away!!! That little thing is amazing. Great work on that, big thumbs up.

Well, since there's now a month left, this one WON'T be going out. The damascus I'm working with has some issues with de-laminating. Decided to finish it anyway. Ebony handle, hidden tang, Ti butte and guard.

Today I seem to feel good after being sick for 5 days, so I decided to get the mini ready for heat treat. Got all the scratched out I could see, fired up the propane torch in the kitchen, warmed up some peanut oil to 150*, got the blade nice and bright orange and held it for about 2min then quenched. Here it is right out of the oil:

Uh oh! Got a little tweaked in the quenching, a slight bend but no twist. I went out to the garage, cut a couple of pieces of mild steel and found a small C-clamp. Clamped it all up and put the whole thing in the oven.

I have it cooking at 400* for 1 hour right now and will repeat this once more. Is this too high of a temperature to temper 1080? If so its only been in the oven a couple of minutes I can turn it down.

Looking forward to more progress from everyone!

450F is not uncommon. 400 is a starting point.

Good to know. Well two 1 hour cycles are now done, everything came out a nice straw color so I assume it went ok. Plus for the thinness of this I think the little extra hardness will help. Also it came out straight as an arrow! Off to work now, so hopefully tonight I can get it sanded down an polished up. Next up is final fitting of the guard and stacking the leather handle.

I hit mine with the sand blaster to straighten it. I tried clamping once to straighten it and it still came out warped. What is it going to be, a dagger of some sort?

Yeah it was nice that clamping worked, this thing is thin and I wouldn't want to try and over bend it to straighten.

It's a 1/5 scale USM3 fighting knife from WWII.

Aaaaargh! Forged from three more pieces and two of them delaminated. Finally, the third piece looks clean after forging. Got a nice, mini hunter. The blade is a little shorter than the one I posted earlier, but it is still the proper shape. 96° outside and I'm running the forge! Also, started forging a mini hatchet. I'm starting to like minis.

Well at least the price of screwing up isn't as high as on a full size knife! Time seems to be almost the same, but materials are cheap!

Finished pre-HT sanding. No sign of delamination whatsoever! Very happy!

Have to disagree about the time, though. It's much quicker to hand sand a 1" x ¼" blade than a 9" x 2" bowie. Also much quicker to file the slot in the guard. Woodwork and forging are maybe a hair quicker.

I kinda wish I'd joined this KITH, but since I now have three projects running at once it is probably wide that I didn't. Keep posting the pictures, guys. I like seeing what you're up to.
