Congrats on 2000 posts, winter!
Anthony, an HJ CAN be done. The only difference from a non-EO is the punch has to be shortened to accommodate the cutout in the handle. For some punch styles, that diminishes the effectiveness - but that too can be overcome to some extent.

This makes me very psyched. I'd prefer an awl or cap lifter instead of the pen, but I can deal with the pen too, esp. if the spear is going to be a big gigundo spatula of a blade. GEC definitely has no dearth of jigging patterns, but I'll leave that part to the experts.

Edited to add: Hey, this is my 2000th post! Yay me!

Congrats on 2k! Too bad you are not a chatty cathy like me. I done tripled ya! :D

If we get a bid from Queen, ask about having the main grind taken down to 0.010" and left unvandalized. I'm tired of repairing the damage they call sharpening. My last six Queens, including 2 each 2009 and 2010 Forum knives looked like they were sharpened by a drunk who had never even seen a picture of a sharp knife.

Jack,

That is funny. I am at the point where I would rather sharpen it myself as well. My 2010 moose had about a centimeter of edge that was odd. I fixed it without much effort. The less grinding on the main bevel from the factory the better.

With a big fat fully swedged spear blade and a long pull? I'd give this suggestion some consideration. One like this old HSB with a bail?

This would be awful nice to have (something other than black I hope).

At any rate, where do I put myself on the list for one (regardless what it ends up looking like)?

Bill said he will quote us a price to do one, but would prefer to do it just as that knife is patterned. Nice wide spear, and a pen blade. 3 5/8" EO, (long enough for you Greg?).
Jigged bone handles. He can come up with an in-house Jigging (winterbottom or ??) that would be special for our knife.

That would really be something to have!!
Greg

I know its early in the process but if it comes close to what we are aiming for for this year then I think we would be crazy to turn it down. I believe it would be a new model for GEC in possibly new jigging and just for us...

Charlie, I'll give you a call Sunday or Monday (don't Kanucks celebrate Christmas on the 27th? ;) Charlie's guidance and advice has been invaluable in all aspects of this forum and I've reached out to him on several occasions for his advice. I think it's great we have a guy like that on our side. Merry Christmas Canadian White Beard.

If the general opinion is now for something off that EO that Hal posted, I am thrilled almost to tears. If that is the way we go I will be buying more than one. That big leaf spear is to die for. And I personally think the pen secondary is the most useful blade ever, even though a punch is nice... Anyway, I wouldn't alter that pattern one whit, except for handle material, of course. Thanks, guys, for your hard work so far!

My preference is still for a cap lifter or a wharnecliff secondary, but otherwise I would really like an EO w/ fat spear. I could also do without a bail -- esp. if it meant we would have to "compromise" to a lanyard hole :barf:. Again, I'll ask that we choose a nicer stainless steel this time as a way to alternate back to it (1095 this past year, D2 before...).

This has been a fun thread to read so far guys. It's interesting to see what everybody wants. I would love to see a new version of the EO Teardrop that Charlie posted, but you never know what will happen when the voting starts. I didn't think that the Moose would be picked last year. It was however, the smallest and the least expensive of the three finalists which may have played a part in the decision. Even though it wasn't my first choice I'm more than happy with it.

At any rate, where do I put myself on the list for one (regardless what it ends up looking like)?

We've still got a ways to go before we get to that point. The guys in charge have to come up with a few finalists after seeing what the knife manufacturers will make and get some quotes from them. Then there will be a vote between the finalists to decide which one we will get this year. Keep an eye out in the Traditional Forum for the voting threads and the eventual order thread.

Thank you for the info Dan... I'll keep an eye out.

We will be working on this more starting the new year. I for one am excited about what our narrowing of choices are. Happy New Year all!

Y'know, if we went stainless, I wouldn't have any problems with GEC's 440C.

I personally want something that will patina...I'm at a point where I'm over stainless, carbon steels just have more character so each knife in 50 years time will look different.

Aggreed, with age I'll remember how the patina naturally changed with use.

With all the supersteels it's nice to see the old high carbon blade, easy to sharpen to a wicked edge and easy to maintain it.

As I grew up in Europe on a steady diet of Opinels, I've never really developed a taste for the shiny stainless steels...

Maybe you can list the top-5 choices as they now stand. I've lost track as to the favorites so far.

Digging through my files, I found these two Utility Teardrops. Just to confuse the issue of course!:D

This one's a Utica.

Notice the "nub" screwdriver.

And this one's from Canton Cutlery in Ohio.

Interesting blades in them!

If it ends up being a Teardrop... I really like the classic look of the fat pointed bottom frame with the big leaf spear blade of both the Utica & the Wilber EO that you posted earlier, Charlie :D The shield is perfect too!
