2011 Traditional Forum Knife Thread

Bill said he will quote us a price to do one, but would prefer to do it just as that knife is patterned. Nice wide spear, and a pen blade. 3 5/8" EO, (long enough for you Greg?).
Jigged bone handles. He can come up with an in-house Jigging (winterbottom or ??) that would be special for our knife.

Chris, Campbell and Andy, please don't think I'm stepping on your toes. Bill's an old friend, and I have another deal going with him, so I brought it up. The rest is up to you guys!:o

That sounds really good to me.

If we have to have a bail, I want scissors!
(Scale material negotiable)

If it wouldn't be too much of a pain to make the secondary a cap-lifter or a Wharncliff blade, I'd be in for the rest of those specs. I'd prefer pickbone or other jigging -- no herring bone or "strange stuff." Keep it classy and traditional. Winterbottom, if dark, is good. Did you talk about blade steel options...? (Then again, this is probably putting the cart before the horse)

I like the idea of jigged bone or the amber winterbottom (shielded). I am indifferent on the bail, but would like the EO notch. The big fat spear is awesome, and the 2nd blade I can live with any of the suggestions except the scissors. Would prefer sheepsfoot or wharncliffe.

I'm not real big on easy opens myself, but put some winterbottom bone on that puppy and I'm in for two. :D

This is exactly my thoughts as well.

I like the idea of a single blade Slimline Jack or a single blade Copperhead.

Think Queen #41.

I guess I could go for an easy open with jigged bone (winterbone would be fantastic). I would prefer a no bail for this year, so we are cool that way. Steven

I hope I am not going to get lynched for putting this forward as a suggestion...
A fairly large ( 4 inches closed min. ) single bladed lockback, either Stag, OR Ebony ( as per recent discussions...the blacker the better?)
The maker of the knife?...off the top of my head...either G.E.C, or Queen?
The blade style either a sleek clip point with a deep swedge - or a Wharnie.

And finally...I want to be in on this on come hell or high water :D

ps... I have enjoyed reading everyones efforts in puttting forward their ideas...it will be real interesting to see what comes of the 2011 knife....whatever the outcome..in the future..I want to be sitting back, peeling back a nice cold beer, and showing my good pal my new 2011 knife forum blade!
Merry Christmas bladeforum friends, I hope its a very very happy and safe one for all.
Duncan

oh..pps, to the three great guys who have put their hands up, thank you, thanks very much because without guys like you-we would simply not get to see this knife be born!

Hi Charlie -

Quite the contrary - I think it is a great help! Thank you!

I love the direction this one is heading!

I also agree that jigged bone would be an appropriate choice to even out the variety for those that had desired other than ebony for the 2010 knife.

best regards -

Great work!

I presume you have an offline discussion with Chris, Campbell and Andy

Charlie,

As we discussed, and we opined from the get go, and as Gus recommended, we welcome your input, connections, liaison work to help us through this up coming years knife. I may have some time to talk betwixt Christmas and the New Year possibly. Once we talk again, we can proceed to the next step, and start looking at options that a manufacturer can produce for us.

Thanks again!

This sounds like a Dream Ticket:thumbup:

Grizzly Bone would be an OK alternative to WB as well. We'd be insane to let this one pass in my view:D:eek:

I think there is some difficulty with the awl/hole maker on the easy open pattern, but not educated enough to know why. Maybe Charlie could explain that one again as to the the why's or why can'ts there be an easy open harness jack in a teardrop. Hopefully, I heard him wrong, and we can have that.

I must have missed that one if Charlie did in fact state that this could not be on option.. I am not the brightest bulb on the tree, but I see no reason why an EO Harness Jack Tear Drop pattern with the punch as the secondary blade/tool couldn't be built.?.

I am in no way an expert on the subject however the tear drop EO pattern just screams Spear/Pen combo. I had been pushing for the lifter option but it just doesn't seem to fit. I am totally in love with this very traditional pattern with the pictured combo.

This makes me very psyched. I'd prefer an awl or cap lifter instead of the pen, but I can deal with the pen too, esp. if the spear is going to be a big gigundo spatula of a blade. GEC definitely has no dearth of jigging patterns, but I'll leave that part to the experts.

Edited to add: Hey, this is my 2000th post! Yay me!

If we get a bid from Queen, ask about having the main grind taken down to 0.010" and left unvandalized. I'm tired of repairing the damage they call sharpening. My last six Queens, including 2 each 2009 and 2010 Forum knives looked like they were sharpened by a drunk who had never even seen a picture of a sharp knife.
