2012 HTM Forum Gunhammer: *Commitment/Sign-up* thread

It sounds to me that we would have to find a new Ano shop, then have them make samples and probably end up finding out they cant do it:thumbdn:. To find new source for the ano would almost be ridiculous :confused:and go through that experimentation on our beloved S90v Forum Knife:eek: No way. I think we should ask Darrel what sould be the next step? If you ask me we should vote for a color that HTM's normal Anodizing shop can do, something tried and true and level 3!!! My vote would also be grey:thumbup::thumbup:

From everything I've seen and read Dark Green like we wanted is not nor was not ever doable, or at least thats what my research shows. I'm sure thats why HTM's normal ano guy bailed, He knows it can't be done like we want and was being practical. Sad to say but thats the way the cookie crumbles:(

Could you post links to some of the stuff you've found? I've never looked into it myself, and having it out there for everyone to read could be useful both in explaining/justifying a switch if we have to go that route and in helping to ensure that we choose doable colors on future special order knives.

How do I post links? I went to google typed a few things one I know was (anodizer color spectrum) just plain anodizer's(machines, kits for doing it) and anodizer companies. I also looked up techniques and what I've seen from other companies. I should have wrote down the site I was at but it gave a spectrum of colors, think rainbow colors.
It makes sense to me though, but then again I never saw grey on the spectrum so explain that:confused:. I think it would be best to ask Darrel what he would do if in our shoes and go from there, hell he problaby knows more than me:D. Since we would have to find a new Co. for the Anodizing I don't think it could be done in a timely fashion.

I also just now typed in anodizer color chart, and hard coat anodizing and I think I got a few charts. Type 2 which means theres a dye added produces vibrant colors not dark colors from what I gather. Type 3 hardcoat has a general greyish hue and due to its naturally darker appearence does not produce the vibrant colors a type 2 does. Type 3 is rockwell range is 60-70 hrc. This little bit of info is from International Hardcoat site if that helps:thumbup:

From what I gather type 2 is no where near as wear resistant and its not a hardcoat:eek: This data is from Interntional Hardcoat also. The colors for type 2 are vibrant colors not dark colors as well.

Well, since type 3 is darker anyways, I don't really see the problem.

This guy clearly has managed to do a dark green that's about the color we were looking for. And in the better anodizing anyways. Perhaps what needs to happen is just do a standard green, and it will automatically become darker due to the nature of the process.

I would hate to see some vibrant color like that on are forum knife:thumbdn: mine would be on the exchange same day:eek:. I can't see an HTM with a vibrant color like well any of those, it just doesn't fit the knife imo.

I agree. It's a clownish color.

I'm pretty sure if the anodizing came out too shiny you could do some light stonewashing or blasting on it to dull it down like the Kershaw in the top picture.

I personally dont want a christmas gunny! Should we ano the screws bright red?! And maybe the pocket clip we can do like a candy cane twist?! Please Darrel just give me some S90V and a grey or black handle!!!

I'm not sure why everyone who signed up for green and knew they were signing up for green are now trying to change the color.

If we CAN'T do green that's one thing. But it seems like this is becoming an excuse to switch.

I personally didn't choose green as my first choice and am not a huge fan but its what we signed up for and a lot of the guys in this deal wanted the green handles. We should stick to that if it remains an option.

If the verdict is we can't do it then we are left with the steel being the custom feature. At that point, we couldn't get what we asked for so maybe we have a color option of the three handles? They have those handles made for regular runs, should be a non issue?

At this point I'm about to say screw it, I originally thought we would have a manly dark green color, not some fruity pastel colors:eek: things changed the normal ano guy won't do it/ can't do it to our specs, so that should be the end of the story!! Your telling me after 6 months were gonna look for new ano people. All I know is some people were way to set on handle color. I don't want to have to re-finish the knife b/c it came with a hideaous color that doesn't belong on a HTM in the first place.

Type III is far better than fruity colors.

Settle down, guys. Unless Darrel or I announce otherwise, the plan is to try to do the dark green color that everyone originally signed up for. At a minimum, that's going to involve checking with some other anodizers, which is something that Darrel is going to have to do anyway since their regular ano guy is no longer willing to do colors outside the standard black/brown/gray.

Don't worry about HTM springing some light green or other "fruity" color on you -- that's simply not going to happen. If it turns out that a dark green close to what we requested can't be done, we'll discuss which of the various suggestions to proceed with at that point. Continuing to argue about the handle color before Darrel has a chance to talk to some other anodizers and, if they think it's doable, get some samples done, seems to be accomplishing little more than sowing enmity among the forum members.

As for the "shininess" of the anodized aluminum, that has more to do with the way the handles are finished than with the anodizing color/process itself. The aluminum handles on the HTM Gunhammer are media blasted after the ETAC pattern is CNC'ed (but before they're anodized): the rougher blasted surface helps make them less slippery and gives the final, anodized handles a matte look. By contrast, it looks like all the pictures of green anodized aluminum posted above weren't blasted, and in some cases were even polished, prior to anodizing. So you're not going to end up with a shiny-handled HTM Gunhammer that you have to scuff/blast yourself to get a more subdued look; the process by which the handles are made and finished means that, whatever the anodizing color, they're going to have a matte finish.

^ Sounds good to me, I don't think Darrel would let a fruity knife out the door:D or at least I hope not. I'm guessing this will add more delays to an already lenghty project, but then again I'd rather wait longer and have it done right.
