2012 Traditional Forum Knife - let's begin discussion.

There is a little more to the forum knives than a lot of people know.

One it is a lot of work for the volunteers. (And this thread will make their job even harder).

Two, as a mod, I had to guarantee the forum owner that if something happened cash wise (meaning funds vanishing), I would personally be responsible for refunds to the ordering members.

Lets give the new mods a chance to settle in, decide if they want to continue the effort and take the responsibility and allow them time to pick the folks who will be heading the effort.

Whoever the new committee are I'm sure they will do a great job, but I also think we should close this thread down and start to narrow things down...take the trending patterns and get a poll running before we add every traditional pattern in existence. :)

Wasn't that the unspoken goal of this thread? :D

I hadn't thought about this kind of things, nor did I knew about the mod's responsibility. Sounds fair that they take their time. Meanwhile, I guess the brainstorming could go on for a little longer...

That is for the "new comittee" to do. They give us stuff to vote on.

Not sure what the goal was, it doesn't work that way though. I though it was just a place to see what others were thinking, and throw a few ideas around. In the end the new committee (assuming there will be one) will give us a number of patterns to narrow down to a few, then we vote a winner from that. At least that's the way I remember it working.

Personally I don't think it wouldn't bother me if a bunch of guys fantasized about knives while I decided weather or not to even continue organizing a forum knife anymore. I think Gus was trying to say that it might bother some people, and he would know allot better than me since he has been responsible for a few.

It would be cool if maybe a date were given when we could expect some info, that way we could all get on with our normal activities without pestering.

I was just kidding about the fact that, as others have noticed, a huge variety of patterns came out in this thread. Of course someone will eventually narrow it down, but still I find it interesting, in this first introductive thread, to consider any choice proposed by anyone, as taste is a very personal thing. That's what I thought the OP meant to do when he started this thread. I'm sure that anyone who proposed a knife pattern here was seriously advocating it as a possible choice, and that the future committee might find this brainstorming helpful. At least I hope so. Then, when the committee is formed and the choice is narrowed down to a few options, we will focus more.

Now if Gus is correct (and I have no doubt that he is) where he says above; "Two, as a mod, I had to guarantee the forum owner that if something happened cash wise (meaning funds vanishing), I would personally be responsible for refunds to the ordering members." that may well put another light on the Forum Knife issue.

Say Gus had to guarantee to cover 160 knives at $90.00 each, that would mean he was putting himself on the line for $14,400.00.

Pause for thought for one or both of the new Mods for sure.

Cash?? whats that?
surely its all done via credit card transfer by which the dough would be trackable from payer to payee.
How about setting up a bank account? Money in money out all above aboard.
anyway just a thought.
lets let the knife do the talking. survey time. I reckon we can knock it on the head by the end of the year-not much else on .

I could go for a Sodbuster with a profile like this:

View attachment 246246

But not the normal "fat" profile like the standard production Case knives.

Oh yeah! I can see me with this Soddie in my pocket next year..... G10 or Micarta would suit me just fine... 1095 blade steel, @ 3.5 OAL.... My goodness I'm startin to sweat......:D

Yea, I'll buy one no matter what. But I don't think it's time to start deadlines and polls and timeframes. Last year, we didn't get started until well into the new year. If I recall, many people didn't even have their knives at this time last year. I don't think the REAL work needs to start until late January or February. There is no reason to get into a heated debate right know over the 2012 knife. This is simply a place to make known your likes and let people know what peaks your interest. When the time is right, the new committee will step in and take control over the process. In the meantime, just have fun with it.

Just curious, what makes it a eureka jack?? Handle shape?

As far as I know, that's about it. I've seen older ones posted here with either a spear or clip master blade. Even though I normally prefer a clip for it's piercing ability, somehow the thin spear just fits this pattern shape better IMO.

Gus, thanks for sharing a little bit of what goes on behind the scenes. I had no idea that you were personally responsible for the funds if something went wrong. I was actually thinking the other day that it was a lot of money for the people in charge to have to be accountable for, especially considering the number of knives ordered the last couple years.

Thanks Campbell. Folks, there's a lot of discussion and decisions that need to be made, on this side of things. Let's have fun here and not get ahead of ourselves. Your patience and understanding will be appreciated.

This just needs to be fun right now, the volunteers of 2012 can reread this thread and make some generalizations as to what the majority is and then do a poll for easy tally. Life will jump right up in your face as you are doing your do-gooder task for the community. My mom passed away in June this year, so it was really tough at times to even think about the forum knife then. The object is to please the masses, not everybody and keep it folksy and original. I will say that banking 18K of other people's money is scarier than I thought it was. I do not want to do it this coming year, that is for sure, but whoever ends up in that position can call me and I will tell them what worked, what to watch out for, etc.

Enjoy, this has been fun watching the toe fish pattern develop. Hee haw, chuckle gasp wheeeeze, inhale. :p

"Fun"... This is one of the great things about the forum knife process. I really enjoy hearing why, and what it is about this pattern or that pattern that individuals like or dislike about each. It's nice to feel that each member plays a small part in the process, even if it's just a very tiny part. Personally, I don't have much experience with, or knowledge of "the traditional pocket knife" so this process is not only a whole lot of fun, it's also very educational... especially since so many here are so patient and willing to share what they know with we relative "newbs".

The down side though, is the fact that with all of this new knowledge of "the traditionals", comes a greater level of admiration for a type of knife I've always known about, that's been hidden right under my nose, that I've never properly appreciated... and with that new found admiration and appreciation comes the desire to buy them... lots of them... all of them.

Hi, my name's Tim and I've become a traditionalaholic (where do I sign up for the 12 step rehab program?).

How about one of these made by GEC? ;)

I am falling in love with a whittler pattern such as this:

I think it would make a great pattern. I officialy give my vote to this pattern.

I just cant stop thinking about those two Muskrats that Charlie put up a while ago...one smooth sleek blade, the other serrated, Am I alone in thinking that this would be a very cool knife (with some lovely light coloured Jigged Bone)...check out these knives...now I am not a HUGE fan of the Muskrat, but when I see a nice one....they are hard to go past..what do you guys think of these? ( if I may borrow your photo Charlie? )
