I just cant stop thinking about those two Muskrats that Charlie put up a while ago...one smooth sleek blade, the other serrated, Am I alone in thinking that this would be a very cool knife (with some lovely light coloured Jigged Bone)...check out these knives...now I am not a HUGE fan of the Muskrat, but when I see a nice one....they are hard to go past..what do you guys think of these? ( if I may borrow your photo Charlie? )

I could go for a muskrat... especially if we could have them done in rams horn!

Those Muskrats posted by Charlie are outfitted with the Turkish clip blades, one of my favorite blade types. I would love to see us build outr next project knife with a turkish clip blade. In a previous post on this thread 2Dead posted several early Schrade waldens with similar blade types.

Either a GEC #48 WT or Jack a la Schrade 294 would easily kick this knife out of my pocket as my most used

Once the committee is selected, I'd like to offer up a donation of rams horn if it is something that the masses would like to consider as scale material... I have no idea how far the horns I have would go... whether they would make 10 knives or 100, but I'd be glad to see them put to use on a project like this. Not even sure if the company who would build the forum knife would even want them, but who knows.... If memory serves, I think I have at least 5 matched sets of large dark/black horns, a couple or 3 matched sets of medium sized, light/common colored, and maybe another 5-6 sets of small light colored ones... All the horns are full and uncut (cores removed and de-stinkified:D), and the large ones probably measure about 16-18 inches, medium about 8-12, and small from 4-8 inches... they've been dry for at least a couple of years. I can shoot some pics if the committee thinks they might be of use and wants to take a peek.

Just something to think about when the time comes...

Rams horn sounds really interesting but if its anything like other similar horns I've used would it be more suitable if its been professionally stabilized?

I'm not sure, but I don't think that rams horn needs to be stabilized... I read it somewhere (Ed Fowler?) that once it's cured properly (dried and weathered), it's about as stable a material as you can get. As Mr. Fowler says, "I will use any material for handles as long as it comes from the head of a sheep.":D

Sounds good to me! I was unsure if it suffers from delaminating like some other horn I have used on knife handles and such...its a very good looking material! and Ed Fowler really knows his stuff. I love his consistent style of his fixed blade knives.

Ram horn is amazing stuff. It is tough, does not delaminate like buffalo, and gets grippy when wet. I have ram horn on a straight razor and love the performance of the scales.

The limited horn could be a benefit for early payment. First come, first served.

Ram's horn would be awesome.

Re: some of the personal guarantees of funds, the committee might consider an escrow service. I know some fantasy football leagues handle it that way through services that are accustomed to handling relatively small sums for relatively low fees. Here's an example of a company that does that sort of thing: http://www.safefunds.com/?gclid=CKDL7N-j_qwCFYpY7AodrCezUA

Note that I don't have any experience with that company, nor am I trying to promote them. Just throwing out an idea to the committee.

Even if we need to pay an additional fee so personal guarantees are not required and protect the folk putting the hours in I would personally be fine with that. :)

Keep something in mind, we've done a Pen Twist Ring from Canal Steet in Burnt Stag, A Cannitler from Canal Street in Mammoth (IIRC), a Medium Stockman from Northwoods Burnt stag, a Barlow from Queen in Stag, a Moose from Queen in Ebony and a EO Jack from GEC Jigged Peachseed Bone.

So with that in mind any pattern and scale material would be fine so long as we don't repeat a past pattern.

Now a 2 blade Senator with Winter Bottom Bone, like the old Queens would be knice. ;)

It would have to be an awfully big senator to fit the Bladeforums tang stamp on the main blade.

I wanted to show a few examples of what I've got for ram's horn and what it can look like...

I did the handle on the Damascus folder from what I call a "natural colored" horn that I book matched. I have a trapper blank there that I'll be using rams horn on also so I've shown a couple of pieces similar to what I'll use (that's one half of one horn (the hollow half), split and book matched).

The black horns are what I've referred to as dark/black and are a matched pair of "medium" size. I have a couple or three other sets in black that are "large" and do a full curl into sort of a complete circle (the mediums are what I'd call a half-circle).

Again, these are available for this project if the powers to be and folks think they would be of use.

Personally, I'd love the 2012 to be done in ram's horn (even if it isn't from my stuff).

I wouldn't mind mammoth again!
