2014 BladeForums Knife Gallery

Lots of great forum knives posted today and yesterday.:thumbup::)

I ordered a couple - maybe tomorrow? :confused::o

Fantastic knives folks, GEC did a stunning job all around. The stag, blades, and those bolsters are just beautiful! Kudos to everyone involved in the project!! (Now you FINALLY get to take a breather ;) )

Just wanted to add a comment regarding the post quoted below; take GREAT care if any of you want to attempt a mod like that, those center pins are spun, meaning that they have a head on them similar to a nail head. There's no swelling of the pin at all below the head, which means that if you grind the head off the only thing holding the pin in place is the spring tension. Eventually it'll work loose and you'll wind up with gaps, a protruding pin, and a knife that needs to be re-pinned and spun. No offence meant toward the OP, just felt that folks needed to know the downfalls.

Eric

Thanks Eric, no offense taken. I figured the pin would need to be replaced, but I'll mess with it later. The Stag is starting to grow on me, but if that doesn't pan out, it may get some wood or bone scales anyway.

All the best!

The variations in the handles are amazing!
Some like 'em smooth, some like 'em gnarly! But we all like 'em sharp!:p
I can see a little horse trading is inevitable.
And some honing - also inevitable.:D

I am putting a little more acute edge on my "second", and I am going to use it.:)

Believe it or not, mine came hair shaving sharp! It's the first GEC build knife I have ever picked up that came that sharp. :)

Mine arrived at the house this evening. Really came out beautifully! Great bit of popcorning in the stag, and very nicely matched and symmetrical. Nice work GEC and Big thanks to Charlie, John and Barry - and further thanks to Charlie for letting me work on the label. It was a blast.

Quick cell phone pics.

Came home from vacation and the first thing I asked my Daughter is "did I get a package" and she said a package came a couple of days ago. Well needless to say I was overjoyed and could not wait to open it. It is very near perfect for me and my wife does not like stag but this changed her view of it. I was glad to see the swedge was different than my 78 and 85 and pull is in between them. Thanks GEC, the matching and f&f are beautiful and very proportional. And of course thanks again to John Lloyd, Charlie, Barry, Liamstrain, and everyone involved.
I hope my phone pictures turn out (second posting) and I know they are not great.

Got my two!

They turned out great. I just need some help deciding which to carry and which to save.

What do you think folks? Top or bottom?

Thanks to all who had a hand in pulling this together!

Don't have a pic, just wanted to say it's a beaut...

Thanks for all the work on this one folks.

I couldn't be any happier with the knife I received. The stag on mine is thin, just as I had hoped. Thanks to all involved!

I'm paring down my knife collection and this may be the one slipjoint I keep (along with a SAK.)

Tripton.....carry the top one and save the bottom one for the drawer.....

Save for what? I'd use them both.

I agree. The top one has more white at the ends that will be fun to see darken with age and use. The bottom one has more figuring the whole length already. But that's just my opinion, and they are both beautiful. (is the pull equal on both? that would be a factor as well, for me)

Such fun seeing the variations in everyone's knives. All the same, yet each unique. Like snowflakes..............

Man, I have not had enough sleep this week!

Lots of nice ones coming down the pike. So far most all make mine look rather plain. I have to admit I'm a bit envious of the more gnarly pieces.:thumbup:

I got two.
First

Second

I like that: the scales are fairly evenly matched from one side to the other and the action is reasonably smooth, though not perfect.

I don't like: that the last 1/2 inch of the cutting edge is not sharpened, at all. Blunt square. All the GEC's I have bought in the last 6 months (maybe 8) have had the same issue. I emailed the company 4 months ago and did not receive a reply about this. While I might seem picky this should be a bit better. I can fix it pretty quick but if I were wanting to keep one in pristine collectible condition, this would raise questions in my mind about whether I should make the correction or leave it as is.

All said, I really like them and would buy again. I appreciate the hard work that went into them and the planning and design.

Wow lwrhea, that first one you posted is amazing! That is winning the stag lottery right there, gorgeous figure and color. Love that one!

Lin, great stag on both, but the first one is really primo. Definitely leave the collectable as is. I have heard that some cutleries in the past purposely left their edges dull to prove that their knives had not been sharpened or carried by the owner/collector. I don't think this is GEC's intent, which makes the inconsistent sharpening so baffling. They don't have to whittle hair from the factory, but they should never be blunt. Fortunately, I rarely get one that isn't sharp, but far too many do.
