2014 BladeForums Knife Gallery

sceva, I used a Lansky also. I find it sets up a blade so you can go a long time with free-hand touch-ups!

I am about to set up a "sticky" for delivery questions!
Watch for it, if you don't have your knife (knives) in hand, and please read it twice if you need assistance!
Thanks!!
Charlie

Thanks for doing that...I'm still waiting and have been getting curious, but don't want to bother anyone yet. Hoping I get lucky when I get home tonight but if not, I'll be sure to read it twice!

First off, thank you to all involved in making this possible. This is my first stag handled knife and I couldn't be happier.

They are in route.

On hearing this I rushed out of my block and did a little victory-dance in the garden.:thumbup:

The neighbours likely already have suspicions about me, but now they KNOW :D:D

Watch out Postman, I know you're holding back that box for me!! Insane laughter......

Mine finally arrived after the USPS sent it on a convoluted trip from Washington State to Reno, NV, then to Salt Lake City, UT for a 3 day retreat, then back to Reno, NV and finally here today. Only 9 days :-)
I am very pleased with the knife, as I have been with every GEC traditional I've acquired. The worst of the GEC's I've seen are better than many's best.
The pull is a little stiff - maybe 6-7, but I like 'em that way, as in my experience this will loosen up. Absolutely solid when open - outstanding. Not as heavy in the hand as I thought it might be be.
Thank you all - John L., Charley C., Barry J. & GEC for all the determined effort to get this project to fruition.
Here's the eye candy. What looks in the 4th pic like a line/crack between end cap & pin is not, I looked closely :-):

My second one just came in.
They sure did a great job matching the scales didn't they?

Finally got time to take some pics of mine, well matched and slightly rounded, but not too fat. Very nice, and thanks again to all who helped!

What do those of you who know about such things call the shield on this year's forum knife? Arrowhead, maybe??

Jeff, it looks like/the same as the shield on the Tidioute Houndstooth..some kind of fang! Could be like an antler tip, Crown Point or it may actually be a warrior shield as used in Europe's Dark Ages.

Mine arrived today. Can't say it's what I was hoping for on the stag front, it's almost smooth, but I guess it's well matched at least. Such is the gamble with stag sight unseen....from this thread I can tell the overall quality of the stag was pretty amazing though! Quality of construction is very good.

Editing to add that while I was a little disappointed originally because the stag didn't have the figure that I was expecting and hoping for, this knife had quickly grown on me and at the end if my first day of carrying it I'm actually very pleased with the knife and have been enjoying this stag very much. Not the type of stag I'd have ever chosen for myself, but after having it with me for a day I'm very Happy with it.

Sometimes we just ned to keep an open mind ;)

I ordered 3 and got them a week or so ago. Been out of town so just now looking at them.

Really gorgeous stuff.

But compared to everyone else, all 3 of mine are nail breakers. Literally. These are the most unusable knives I've ever owned from GEC in terms of opening. Also, none of mine are hair popping sharp as others have mentioned. No biggie there as I can take care of that.

To top it off, one of the three does not snap closed.
photo now added, hopefully

Did I get a bum batch?

Really disappointed. These were supposed to be presents for Christmas but I will not give these as presents because of this. I really don't want any of them if these can't be fixed.

These are not my first slipjoints, so I'm familiar with the broad range of springs and force needed to open knives and these are just unreasonable. I'm having to pinch open them using a rubber jar opening pad, and even that is difficult.

Anyone else with this experience?
Not sure if I should contact Charlie or GEC. Or just sell the things. Anyone?

Sorry to hear you aren't happy with yours, Pechelman.
Mine was a bit harder to open than I like. There must have been some buffing compound in there, because after washing and oiling it, it was much better. After a few days of use, now it's perfect. I can even pinch it open if my hands are dry.

first thing i tried was cleaning out the gunk and giving it a good blast of aerosol penetrating oil
it slightly improved the one that would not snap close on its own as it will almost close by itself now, but did little to nothing to help pull. the 2nd nail i broke was post lube treatment and cleaning.

i will say, these are the cleanest knives ive ever seen come from gec
normally im cleaning out lots of black gunk. little to none to be found on mine.

they are currently sitting on a shelf with the blades 3/4 open to leave the springs max deflected
hoping that calms things down, but in my experience it doesnt do a lot

My example was hard to open/close and was slow. Definitely not the spring being overly stout, just the joint was a little tight. Cycled it a bunch today and it has improved considerably.

Just curious: Did anyone get one of the knives that graced the GEC cover?

Also; I know the blades are 1095 and will patina with use; Are the backsprings also carbon steel that will patina with age or are they stainless?
