2014 BladeForums Knife Gallery

Can someone please point me to this 'sticky'. My PMs, emails and requests go un answered. Only received 1 /2 ordered.
sceva, I used a Lansky also. I find it sets up a blade so you can go a long time with free-hand touch-ups!

I am about to set up a "sticky" for delivery questions!
Watch for it, if you don't have your knife (knives) in hand, and please read it twice if you need assistance!
Thanks!!
Charlie

I'm gonna be a patient -in the happy acres funny farm- by the time mine show up.:p
Let me state from deep in my heart.
I have the utmost faith in you Charlie.
You have never let me down with the posting of several blades to me here on the other side of the globe.
I have the patience of a net casting spider.

when it comes to the great wait.

I ordered 3 and got them a week or so ago. Been out of town so just now looking at them.

Really gorgeous stuff.

But compared to everyone else, all 3 of mine are nail breakers. Literally. These are the most unusable knives I've ever owned from GEC in terms of opening. Also, none of mine are hair popping sharp as others have mentioned. No biggie there as I can take care of that.

To top it off, one of the three does not snap closed.

Did I get a bum batch?

Really disappointed. These were supposed to be presents for Christmas but I will not give these as presents because of this. I really don't want any of them if these can't be fixed.

These are not my first slipjoints, so I'm familiar with the broad range of springs and force needed to open knives and these are just unreasonable. I'm having to pinch open them using a rubber jar opening pad, and even that is difficult.

Anyone else with this experience?
Not sure if I should contact Charlie or GEC. Or just sell the things. Anyone?

At least you got some good looking stag....

A stiff joint is one of the better problems to have I feel as you have a good chance of working it out. I'd tape up the blade, flush it with hot water, douse it with oil, then grab that blade and just open and close it a bunch. Spend an hour with one knife and see what happens. It sounds like they maybe just peened it a little tight, good news is you're a really long way from having blade play I'd guess!

they are currently sitting on a shelf with the blades 3/4 open to leave the springs max deflected
hoping that calms things down, but in my experience it doesnt do a lot

You can send the knives to GEC for a pull lightening, or contact the people involved if you're unhappy.
In the meantime, I believe people have had success recently in knocking down the corners of square tangs on nailbreaker knives with a little square file. Reducing that very corner of the tang makes for a much easier pull geometry without messing up the spring position in open/closed.

Mike Latham has noted for some time now on his website that GEC has been peening their knives tighter, ostensibly as a result of getting too many complaints about blade play. Just as getting a knife with blade play from GEC is a remote possibility, and fixable, so it goes for a knife that is a little too tight. Never fear!

Wash out the joints and oil them well. Open and close blades many times to flush out any gunk and keep adding oil till it comes out clear. It works almost every time.

I finally got around to doing a photo. Gotta say that I love mine and it's just about right for me. The scales aren't perfect bookends. The bark runs near full length on the off side, but there's plenty on the shield side, but not so heavy barked that the shield has proud edges. Yep, this is one I think I'll have to put somewhat of a polished edge on and carry each and every day. Sorry Case Mini-Trapper.

been there, done that, and already said i did in a previous post.
thanks for the input, but they are sitting at home, opened between half stops

I'm thinking i may have to take a file and knock off the corner of the first half stop when opening to reduce the amount of distance the backspring has to move when the knife is opened.

Mine's here. I love it! It's been sitting on my desk all day. I've been switching it from side to side every couple hours, as I like to forget what the other slab of stag looks like. A pleasant suprise, each time! Not quite matched, but each side is beautiful in it's own right.

It's about a 7.5 - 8 on the opening, due to the geometry of the position of the long pull. I've got strong thumb-nails, so no problem. I'm sure it will break in fine.

Really happy with mine. If I can remember to get a pic with my wife's phone, I'll post it.

Pictures or it didn't happen! :D

Not meaning to complain I got my knife and it is a beautiful knife. The blade isn't perfectly centered when closed and the side that sits closer to the liner is scratched lengthwise. also when the blade is open it is clearly off to one side and not centered. that and a few disconcerting gaps with blade fit.. is the normal? this is my first GEG.

In my experience this is definitely not normal for GEC., but there are bound to be a few that get through in a run this size
What has been normal from them is outstanding customer service in the few instances where I had an issue with one of their knives.

I am not sure if Charlie (Waynorth) wants to be a go between or not in these cases. You might try contacting him to see, or contacting GEC directly (start on their website) and asking how to proceed with getting your knife looked at and 'fixed' to your liking. A single blade knife that rubs the liner is, to me, too far off center. The gaps just depend on where they are and how big they are.
Either way GEC will do what they can to straighten it out.

I got my forum knife in the mail Saturday and I just got a chance for some pics. This is a lighter colored Stag than in used to buy the matching and thickness were great. You guys did an outstanding job on a beautiful knife, thank you all. Now for some pics.

Ted,

What you've got there is one of the rare winterbottom SJs. You lucked out. ;)

I was thinking the same thing. :) I love the grooves and its not fat stag. It's a very slim Jack and every three shield suits perfectly with no exposed edges. I'm very happy with it.

I just got mine today, thanks again to all involved! The finish on mine is perfect in terms of centering, gaps, etc. what is interesting after reading some of the posts above is the pull on mine, which is about a 4! I think is is just right, and allows me to pinch the blade open. Looking forward already to next years knife:thumbup:
