2014 BladeForums Knife Gallery

When I left for work this morning I put my Forum knife in my pocket and my Blackwood Sheep Foot Charlow in the other. The Charlow made it home with me but the The Forum knife didn't make it home with me. I miss it already.

I attended the Arkansas Knife makers Association meeting this evening and sent it with a sheath maker to have a pocket slip made for it. I can't wait to get it back. If I like the results the Charlow may be next. I will post some pics when I get it back.

Phew! I was on the edge of my seat there Chris, thinking you'd lost it!

I've spent the morning sharpening mine, took longer than I'd anticipated, when I got a glass on it, the tip was very thick with some strange angles. I'm getting there anyway, going to have a break from it for a bit. The rest of the edge got sharp pretty fast, gotta love that GEC 1095

That seems to be a common theme with the tip being thicker. I believe it comes from the blade geometry and GEC wanting a nice even edge grind for looks. I used a Lansky to reset the angle to 25° and then finished it with progressively finer stones and a final swipe on some AG Russell crock sticks - Hair popping sharp all the way to the tip now. it did result in a slightly wider edge toward the tip but I can live with that.
A lot of people collect but don't use them so the factory edge is not an issue. Speaking of collector knives vs using knives; I once bought a hand made custom hunter and it arrived with only a useless starter edge with a definite flat but to give him credit the edges of the guard were very sharp. I called and questioned it and he said collectors didn't want a sharp edge and was very proud of the perfectly square sharp guard corners but had me return it and he gave it a good edge and radiused the guard turning it into a decent using knife. It was just that most of his customers were never going to do anything but look at their knives so he catered to what they wanted.

Here is my blade edge after sharpening. The first photo makes it looks wider at the tip than it is due to the angle of the photo.

Mine did the same thing. The distal taper isn't too strong so its thicker behind the edge at the tip. Inevitable to have a wider bevel unless you raise your sharpening angle in that area.

Mine got super sharp. Gec's O1 is great and their 1095 sharpened up great too.

Mine arrived today. The stag on the shield side has a lot of raised and sharp edges, so I'm going to have to sand it down. Other than that, it's a lovely looking knife.

Thanks to all involved in this years knife. I look forward to the 2015 offering.

THERE'S SOMETHING SPOOKY GOING ON!!!

This arrived in the post. I didn't order it.

I contacted Barry to tell him that I hadn't bought one this year due to an incoming baby, and I was worried I'd been sent one in error an someone would've missing out... I then received an email from Charlie saying that a mysterious benefactor had stepped up to assist me in my plight and that it wasn't him!

Will the mystery traditional blade forums present giver please make themselves known?

This deserves a special thank you and I am extremely grateful - this is a lovely piece of cutlery.

Well Paul, you can't beat that with a stick! What a great place this is! No better people can be found anywhere.

Well Paul your certainly deserving of this fine gift, that's pretty apparent. That said I do not know the gifters involved in this mystery gift but one thing is certain...you are considered family and family helps out family;)

I just wish I had a hand in the gifting part, because as mentioned above...you are a deserving member. Carry, cut and enjoy that fine piece of cutlery as we all know you will and smile as we all know you will when you use it.

I know where your coming from as I like you would want to thank those involved for their generosity;) I hope you find the guilty party/parties involved. But I believe they would rather have you focus on the more important things in your life which I'm sure they know you are:thumbup:

Congrats my friend and I'll keep an ear open bit even of I learned who the gifter's were I'm sure they would inflicted great punishment towards anyone who spoiled their secret.

After all that I'm afraid I am no help whatsoever:D

Enjoy your weekend Paul;)

I'm not crying! There's just something in my eye! :D

Who says people who carry pocket knives are just hoodlums, oh yea right, it was my friends grandmother talking to us when we were 16.

I love this place, the generosity is astounding, the friendships long lived and the people just a pleasure to be around.

I love the pics it's like take pictures in Yosemite, I haven't seen a bad pic of the 2014 Forum knife yet.

Howcome nobody is 'fessin' up??

Scary!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've had mine for a while now, but have been too busy to take pictures and share. Let me say I could not be more happy with it. Awesome, gnarly stag. Perfectly matched. Nicely finished. The pull is probably in the 7-8 range, but I tend to like a firmer pull and it has already loosened up with a pivot flush.

Thanks again to Charlie, John, Barry, and everyone else who helped bring this incredible knife into existence.

This is just so good to read. After a tough day I got to my hotel and " came home" here and read this.
Hey Paul - as people have said- a VERY deserving recipient my friend.
Fantastic stuff- I personally know what having watery eyes is like from finding amazing generosity come here to me.

Thank you to the fantastic, generous person for making Paul's week/month.
