2014 Forum Knife

In my opinion it's rather painful to read through this thread, seeing posters pointing their fingers about, speculating about patterns that most likely won't get made, suggesting improvements to a process when they lack fundamentally important information about what happened with the 2013 knife. I doubt that the curtain will ever be fully raised on the elephant sitting in the corner of the living room, but I hope that there will at least be some honesty about the problems any future BF knife is likely to face. Without that information, without posters knowing the full picture, this thread is worse than pointless.

Well said Jack, the voice of reason at last...

Wow... I couldn't agree more with that post. Even now I would bet that about half the folks that posted think this is the thread that will get the ball rolling, even after a cautionary statement by Frank right up front.

Weird too, to see folks start up with the "I would be interested if " putting conditions on their level of interest and the "I don't know if there will actually be a knife but if there is we should use <fill in pattern, size, etc.> just to make sure they get their favorite idea to the front if it happens at all.

Never have I seen any "design by committee" project go well or smoothly. Reading these past few pages doesn't seem like this one would be much different if it happens.

Exactly, I tried pointing theses things out before but most who read this thread see this, "... order your custom 2014 forum knives here, all suggestions and variations are welcome and will be accommodated..."

The design by committee idea does work, it's worked for the most part for the previous forum knives it's just like every year so far, ya can't please everyone and when ya try, you're up for an epic fail. The dedication of every previous years forum knife committee has been nothing less stellar and each knife in my opinion has gotten better with each successive year.

I've been sitting on the side watching the evolution of this thread and I'd just like to remind everyone that if and when the new forum knife gets made the thread stating so well be posted in the traditional forums here. To my understanding it's being discussed which is more than I thought we'd have at this point.

In eight years of the forum knives being made two things I've learned to keep in mind, # 1, be patient, this is an excruciatingly long process, it takes time, nothing is more off putting to volunteers than see all the aggravation the previous years committee were subject to.

#2 is that with out the ok from Kevin there is no sanctioned forum knife just an SFO so if things aren't moving fast enough for you, see #1.

I suggest to those of you who are really interested in a knife for 2014, read the previous years knives threads to get an idea of what really goes into one of these knives.

Thanks for posting Jack and MF, too many people on this thread have missed the point and haven't read through the entire post, oh well what are ya gonna do?

Thank you.

Yes, I think more attention could have been paid to Frank's cautionary note.

Yes, rather putting the cart before the horse.

Indeed you did Ted, and your posts on this subject carry a lot of experience with them as well as good sense and insight.

Spot on Ted  I think that the 2013 volunteers did a great job, and I didn't see anything wrong with the process. GEC did a fantastic job too and apparently at a very competitive price. The problems lie elsewhere, and that will also be the case with any 2014 knife, with the addition that no company may be willing to build it.

My point exactly :(

:p I'm thinking it'll happen. People just really need to see what all must go into doing this. It's a tough task. IMO, people complain too much about not getting exactly what they want.

If not, we'll just do a NonBF SFO. It could be an Opinel or maybe a Canal Street Cutlery as they only require an order of 50. We can make it fun.

Fellas, while I do not understand the many intricacies of getting this done behind the scenes, I view this thread more as a brainstorming session and to gauge interest in the 2014 edition itself. Twelve pages tells me there is still quite a bit of interest. I am all for any suggestions of paying to vote, or pre-paying on the upcoming pattern if it will ensure the ability to launch. But, lets not put too much weight into the flight of fancy this thread is.

Build it with a BF stamp on it and they will come....

To answer the OP, I am very interested in a 2014 BF Traditional and I hope it will come to pass.

I'll pay to play.

No matter what the final result is, I'm buying at least one.

I'm not going to tell you the pattern I want... or the blade configuration that I want... or the color of the scales that I'd like best... or whether I want a match strike or not because as far as I'm concerned, this isn't about "I".

A BF Traditional with a BF stamp on it is a worthwhile "tradition" that should be continued, relative "pain" or not... too much has been done by too many, for so many years to see all that ground breaking work just end.

Who do I send the "pay to play" check to?

To add... no matter the scale material you all decide to go with... I'm tearin' it off and putin' on rams horn from my own supply (black or natural will be my toughest decision)..... :p :D

92 Eureka spear/coping or wharencliffe/pen either with the primary behind the main

I'd prefer the secondary behind the main blade. But, I think I'm different than most "traditionalists". Maybe. I think the 92 Eureka would be a fine BF knife.

I hope this program does move toward a forum knife. I will buy one or maybe two if it does regardless of what it looks like and I would be happy to do the 50% upfront (or $50 if that was the deal).

There is no better group of traditional knife forum members on the i-net and I'd feel somewhat disappointed if we don't have a forum knife this year.

This thread is fun. I love reading everyones desires. We all daydream about knives or we wouldnt be here. No rules yet, funner to dream :)

I would suggest GEC's Viper knife. Not a wildly popular knife but a good knife none the less. I am partial to Wharncliffe blades as well. Make the handles in "soup bone" with an interesting shield. I think a really long shield would be interesting. More of an inlay really.......sterling silver?

You're at the Sock Hop and there's a girl sitting in the corner that you'd like to dance with. You know she loves to dance, because she danced with everything in jeans at the last six or seven Sock Hops. So you go over and ask her to dance and she says, "Maybe later and maybe not at all."
She's still upset because, at the last Sock Hop, guys took liberties and, when she objected, said bad things about her that nearly ruined her reputation at school.
So, if you really want to dance with her, you have to find a way to ask her that shows her you're sincere and just want to dance and that you won't talk bad about her afterwards.....and the beat goes on.....;)

I like this metaphor.
