2014 Forum Knife

I'll make a pattern suggestion fwiw

White Owl
Spear/Pen or
Spear/Coping or
Clip/Coping
Stag handles
no shield
Nickle bolsters
1095 or O1 blades/spring

I would like to see GEC used again because I know they build quality, and Charlie is a known commodity to them.
Queen and Canal Street's F&F inconsistency scare me and Case just isn't a nice enough knife considering the quality and price range we have become accustom to.

As for pattern polling, I hope we don't settle on a pattern until the winner has more than 50% of the vote.
Last year's Congress Jack only got 114 out of 373 votes, and it showed in the much lower demand compared to the previous years.

I don't agree with Stu on this as to the poll. Say five patterns are listed - the pattern that gets the most votes should be the pattern used regardless of the percentage. I'm not in favor of maybe taking the two patterns with the lowest percentage, throwing them out, and then revoting again on the remaining three. Top vote getter on the first round of voting should get it.

As to the manufacture, I disagree with Stu here again. I hope the manufacture of the 2014 Blade Forums Knife is not limited to GEC (Bill Howard) right off the bat. This would be a great opportunity for Queen (Ken Daniels), if asked, to step in and "Take the Pearl" so-to-speak away from GEC, especially, if the pattern chosen is a standard pattern for Queen (i.e., Country Cousin, Mountain Man, etc.). I believe Ken Daniels would bend over backwards to ensure that the Forum Knife for us would be first rate. Just because something is built by GEC doesn't guarantee quality. Remember the caplifter that for the most part didn't lift anything on the 2011 Forum Knife?

I do agree that no shield would be very nice on most small patterns - 3 5/8" or less.

I think the Sod Buster came in second last year. It'd probably come in first this year if it is in the poll and I see no reason why such a popular pattern shouldn't be in the poll.

Ed, I'll let Charlie or Dave chime in if they want to, but I'm pretty sure the intent is to solicit quotes from other manufacturers. I'm sure Queen will be one of them.

I'm also pretty sure that we got no response from anyone but GEC last year. That may have been because of the pattern chosen, or some reason I'm not aware of or have forgotten. If someone knows different, I stand corrected.

The rest of it will all come out in the wash.

I was just throwing out some thoughts Gary. Ya gotta admit I wasn't grumpy, short, snippy, or anything like that. I'm just going with the flow this year.

You'd think the new owner of a company trying to reestablish the prodcut name would jump at such a chance as this but whatever trips their trigger I guess.

Hopefully, the first poll will be up soon.

Ed, You are the epitome of graciousness and reasoned logic!

As long as the end product is a good one, I'm not too partial on who makes it. I like something from the big ones we are all thinking about.

A medium sized jack knife with a clip main blade and a sheepfoot secondary is something you don't see too often (think of a Schrade 93OT Wrangler) - it'd be cool with stag handles too (of course I could live with bone, wood, Micarta, or Delrin as well). OH

I really like GEC, I probably have more of their knives than any other maker. I know they were the only guys to accept last year too but as others have said; I would love to see another maker challenge the GEC traditional forum monopoly.

Just a thought, has anyone considered a small pocketable fixed blade? ;)

That's something I've been looking for myself. I find when I carry a stockman pattern that the sheepsfoot and clip blade get most of the work. I've always thought it would be interesting to have the same blades but with no crinking in a 2-blade jack.

What about this little guy? I would love to see the pen blade changed into a little wharnie to give it some uniqueness :)

Even with "free" cover material, I wouldn't think we could get that knife, with three blades, for $100 or less. We gotta think cheap here Jeff - nice but cheap.

I have always wanted a knife bases on a traditional Muskrat frame with dissimilar blades, say California clip and Wharncliff. I may have to wait on that one until I can commission it or build it myself. I do like the idea though.

I'm in regardless, but thought I'd throw a single bladed stag Boys Knife into the mix.

I was thinking the same thing. A single blade #15 in stag would be amazing! Preferably a barehead clip point.

I'm digging this idea!

Yes! The GEC #15 pattern works for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. I've gravitated toward wood or micarta traditionals and have avoided getting into stag but a single blade boys knife with barehead stag would be hard to resist. Adding a coping secondary blade like the Eureka Jack would be incredible and I'd be in for a few.

I have never understood the pricing for our knives

From a favorite approved dealer
GEC 2011 Northfield Spring Green Geppetto Wharncliffe Whittler $99.75 for bone
This price shown includes the Dealer mark up

We never seem to pay wholesale prices for a guarenteed run of at least 100
So GEC 2012 Northfield Burnt Stag Geppetto Whittler $131.61 with the Stag supplied and at wholesale
Should be able to come within $100
