2014 Forum Knife

I haven't been involved with a forum knife to date. However, I would jump all over a single blade #15 in stag with whatever blade(besides a wharnie, I think it would look off) the masses deemed fit. I'm not a collector who would buy a BF knife just for the sake of owning one but with something on the table I could really go for I'd be all in.

Let google pick the knife this time... Fooled again.

I am so thrilled that I received the e-mail stating they have dispensed with the polls, and have picked a knife pattern for the 2014 Forum knife, one that is near and dear to my heart, will be offered in stag, ebony, and faux ivory, a folder, an existing pattern, single blade, cut swedge Wharncliffe blade, and all for less than $100.00 delivered. All this angst, the heaviness on all these shoulders, the petty quibbles, all for naught. I just ordered mine, but wished they would let us order more than two...how many have ordered theirs?

I have never understood the pricing for our knives

From a favorite approved dealer
GEC 2011 Northfield Spring Green Geppetto Wharncliffe Whittler $99.75 for bone
This price shown includes the Dealer mark up

We never seem to pay wholesale prices for a guarenteed run of at least 100
So GEC 2012 Northfield Burnt Stag Geppetto Whittler $131.61 with the Stag supplied and at wholesale
Should be able to come within $100

It's still a special one off with the blade forums tang stamp..... It's going to cost a little more.

This was my thinking about it as well. I wouldnt even mind seeing a drawn swedge and unpinched bolsters to help cheapen it. No shield saves money too. I think any traditional knife by any company can be done for under 100 if the options are done right.

Furthermore I am suprised at the lack of interest by manufacturers. We are the demographic, we buy what they make. I doubt a forum knife would ever be a losing venture for a company that can provide a quality knife. Ah well, what do I know.

The pricing should not be a concern at this time. It'll be interesting to see how any profit is handled this year. Charlie says no profit and I gotta take the man at his word. The only thing to consider is that, whatever manufacture is used, they will supply the knives at their wholesale price and then what will the price be to us - the wholesale price or a marked up price. However it goes, I hope nobody has an issue with it as they have in the last couple years. Of course, postage, packaging, labeling, will be an add-on.

I think we should be able to get a nice knife for $100 or less - postage included.

Turkish clip main blade in a high end stainless with stag covers...... 12C27, ats-34, cpm-154.

I have not yet seen the "new" Queen consistently muster to desired tolerances (though there are signs of hope), so I would be hesitant to entrust them with this project-- and especially with John Lloyd's gifted stag-- as a further test balloon to see if they're now up to snuff. Let them get another year of quality production under their belt, then see if they're even willing to take on a BF Forum knife (I don't believe they were interested, last year?).

We're far under Case's requisite minimums, my understanding is that that company is out as well.

If GEC, who has proven amenable to forum knife efforts in the past (and done its part to bring them in under $100), I'm hoping for something other than a #15. Charlie has a proven SFO roll a'goin' with those all on his onesies, and given the varied (and enthusiastic) interests of the members of this forum there's no need to try to tag onto that particular frame-- unless, of course, it's a choice to be voted for and The People indicate that that is exactly what they want. :)

I look forward to the poll(s), and seeing what our best options are.

3.25" regular jack, anyone? Tho' that sleek clip/sheepsfoot jack (based on the OT pattern with serpentine frame) does sound tasty. :)

Wise words and an interesting and tempting design.

I agree with Sarah that Queen's recent quality has been inconsistent (and there's anecdotal evidence to support this). I've only been here for the 2012 and 2013 iterations, but I have to say that GEC certainly provided a great product to us. I can appreciate Ed's point that it would be nice to have other manufacturers involved but I don't think it makes sense to go in a different direction unless there's a compelling reason (cost, established pattern chosen, available materials, etc). To this point I think GEC has more than earned our business and trust.

Regarding patterns, I'll defer to the more experienced here. I'd certainly like something a little different than past knives. Maybe a swayback or a dogleg..???

I've been thinking a 3" to 3 1/2" or shorter folder, patterned after a boy's knife or canoe. But a good fixed blade like this, or the former Blind Horse Knives Classic Stallion would be very nice. Flat grind, clip point, ??? Preferably a carbon blade.

Something similar to this?

Not a super steel though, some nice carbon that will patina :)

I love the idea of a fixed blade. Maybe a small knife about the size of Don Cowles' little drop-point production "Shortcut." If he can sell a fixed blade knife in a sheath for $100, I'm sure we can find something similar. GEC makes some nice fixed blades, as well.

FIXED BLADE! FIXED BLADE! FIXED BLADE!

Okay, now that I've got that out of my system. I'm okay with whatever knife comes up. Variety is the spice of life, and I can't wait to see what we get.

Maybe, with "Okhbon's" permission we could select one of his patterns/knives (Northwoods) that he has made by GEC. That would give us GEC quality with a pattern that might be a little off from the run of the mill everyday patterns. Just a thought.

I certainly wouldn't object if somehow a northwoods whittler in stag for less than $100 were possible...
