2018 #82 Dixie Stockman and Possum Skinner Run

Just received an elderberry stockman. Real nice, quite long overall. The pull weight, while I won't try to assign a numerical effort of force needed, is just right to me. I like stiff pulls on single blades, but with this one the 'lighter' pull is perfect. Not weak or lazy by any means.
The bone is a deep dark maroon with only a hint of lighter red near one corner of one bolster. All in all I am impressed and really like it.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:/:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: (5 out of 5 thumbs ups)

Just received my two new 82s in the mail today. Both good knives. Fit and finish on both are excellent. Pull strength and action are excellent on both knives.

The stag is chunky but the geometry is very even, and it gives the knife a wonderful grip and feel in hand. Probably the most noticeable aspect of the knife is its ergonomics.

I thought I might lend a few thoughts to the 82 I got in recently.

The first one I received is the one in Stag and I hope to have an Elderberry one on its way soon as well. I did not have much in the way of choice on which Stag to choose from as I was late to the party and there was only one left when I went to checkout (there has been a number of new ones listed since then). Easily one of the most expensive GECs that I have purchased at retail which, coupled with the underwhelming Stag, prompted me to list this knife on the Exchange shortly after I got it.

However, lack of interest, current availability, and the departing stress of the holidays have led me to withdraw my listing and give this knife a second chance.

Immediate first impressions:
  1. This is a big knife, bigger than I've been accustomed to carrying since I began carrying slip joints again. The Stag covers are not overly thick, yet they are still substantial enough to fill the hand considerably, though not at all uncomfortably.
  2. The action, though definitely on the lighter side, is not at all unpleasant and it has smooth, easy pulls and plenty of satisfying snap when opening and closing on all three blades. This, in of itself, is rather remarkable, considering that there tends to be variances in most Stockman style knives that I have experienced.
  3. Aside from the aesthetically mismatched Stag (the thickness is nicely matched), the fit and finish seem to be on par with the majority of my GEC knives. Nothing that seems to really set it apart from any of the others and I feel that is a good thing. Blades are very well nested together and any rub that may occur will be my own doing.
  4. The blade selection has offered a couple of nice surprises for me. Though I am not the biggest fan of the slender clip point, I can certainly appreciate its utility as my objections largely come from a matter of taste rather than base functionality. The drop point in place of the spey and the wharncliffe in place of the traditional sheepfoot are excellent blades and undoubtedly useful. It may be the first Stockman knife that I've owned where the secondary blades get more use than the main.
Overall, this is going to be a hefty working knife and I feel that it very well may see a fair amount of use in the coming spring and summer months. I will wait and see which one makes the better user when the Elderberry makes its way here.

Got my possum skinner in! Super slim knife. I like the over all size. This clip blade is long and slicey! Like the wharncliffe secondary. Walk and talk is good. No rub, blades are sharp. Fit and finish is great no snags on any transitions. Nothing to complain about. So far so good. I feel like this is gonna be a nice slicing machine! Can't wait to put it to work.

Sorry for the crappy pic.

I stopped in at the Case factory store the other day to check out the Case/Bose Premium Stockman and figured I’d post these comparison pics with the 82 in case anyone was wondering how they compare size wise.

They’re close in size (4.25” on the Case) but with the much thicker blade stock on the Case/Bose, it’s definitely a more substantial knife.

I should have taken a pic with the Wilfred Lockback Hunter also...that knife is like a folding Bowie haha.

Trade it in !! ;)

Thanks, Mike. Honestly, I had not thought of that as being an option. It was my own fault for not being more attentive to my email and quite frankly, I could have done a lot worse when it comes to the Stag. I do not want to cause you any undue inconvenience but I will shoot you an email and go from there.

I've had mine for a little over a week now. I couldn't pass this one up. I like the symmetrical jigging and color. With the shield and the Tidioute trim it looks great. I've got some blade rub but it's going into the user pile so I'm not to concerned about it. I've carried it in the back pocket of jeans and it's been fine. The pull and snap on the main blade is very respectable. The Wharncliffe is of course lighter but fine. The drop point is gritty and very weak on the open. I've dropped some oil in there but haven't tried to flush it out yet.

I bought the Tidioute in Micarta because I wasn’t sure what the availability would be like on these, and I didn’t want to miss this run. Then I bought the Tidioute in jigged bone for the same reason. Then I bought the Northfield jigged bone because that’s the one I really wanted out of this run. THEN, I saw this guy and broke my shieldless stag fast.

It’s a struggle, you guys.

That Stag would test my endurance too :D But I still think they wimped out by discontinuing shields on Stag, of ALL materials

That Case needs a sheath ...
Wow, these turned out nice, really like the jigging.

I'm new to the whole "mad rush" to find new pattern GEC's ... I see online, the micarta possum skinners are available now - I can't find any reference whatsoever to the red bone version in Northfield trim - does anybody have any insider info when the redbone version will be available (or where to look to find one if they haven't all been snapped up ??) THis is a factory version of my Case Ratcliffe & I would really like to have one ...

Really appreciate it ... thx.

They’ll probably hit dealers in a couple day.
