A 102 in 5160 would be very appetizing to me.

Right?! It's a very useful blade size and is dead sexy in my opinion. A 102 in 5160 is literally next on my list to purchase, but the only thing that has held me back is the fact that I prefer brass bolsters over the nickel-silver used in the C&C version.

The 102 isn't in the custom shop so depending on the handle material, we could end up with one very unique knife. Solid ebony, micarta, buckeye burl, ironwood, etc... Yes please! Heck, with the new Cerakote setup Buck has, we could get REALLY crazy if we wanted, lol.

I think "most" here are fine with both options.
I think there are a few that just won't buy a stainless knife.
I think there are a few that just won't buy a carbon knife.
I think the stainless supporters are more vocal about it.

Cheap carbon > cheap stainless
Decent carbon > decent stainless
Decent stainless > cheap carbon
Good carbon > good stainless
Good stainless > decent carbon

Things just aren't as simple as carbon vs stainless.

Oh, I see your point Jack. Takes me a few sometimes. I agree carbon would be nice but it's my opinion that most here like stainless for these BF annual knives. Either way, carbon or stainless, would suit me.

My impression has always been that the majority here favor carbon steels. I know I am pretty vocal about my preference for stainless, but I usually assume that the forum knife is going to be carbon. Ultimately, it all depends on what the actual options end up being. If we go with GEC, it's gonna be carbon. If we go with something else, who knows. But I really don't think the majority has a preference for stainless on the porch. I think the traditionalists prefer carbon.

Well then, let's hope we don't go with GEC.

i am not sure its really a preference for carbon, its more that the style of knife and quality level of build that is most popular seems to be more available in carbon steel.

I think the numbers are about as follows:

D2 3 knives
Stainless 2 knives
Carbon 8 knives

All folding no fixed.

1 Shadow knife
3 Bareheads (2 Barlows)
Rest double bolster

If a fixed blade becomes a favorable item we could think about the Buck 118 - nice handle size for grown-ups, good blade size for skinning, butchering, and general woods bumming, not a knife they have produced every year, but Buck does make SFO's of this knife semi-regularly - you could get S30V steel and red handles for about $100.00 and they already have the Blade Forums tang stamp built! OH

The 119 does the same things but looks so much better, in my opinion. It's a little bigger, though, but still a good size.
