Well, if you have an exciting, multi-hued wood, it doesn't need a shield of course!
But with a nice deep brown or black wood, it is meant for a shield!! Otherwise you are an artist trying to sell a blank canvas!!
:D

You might say I've been working with a blank canvas for awhile Charlie:rolleyes: but I think with a largish knife with a sheepfoot blade, no shield works.

I went with the smooth wood... I might have to hold off on voting until I see a pic of an 86 in someone's hand though. Seems like a BIG traditional, possibly too big for these baby hands, lol.

I had completely forgot about how great the coconut palm wood looked until I read over the list that waverave so gratefully posted earlier in the thread. Hope it's an option for sure. Jobillo and ebony/African black wood, Kingwood. Hard choices for sure.

Chestnut can be a gamble, I have two that are as badly mismatched as I’ve seen, an it can be porous when exposed to water. When well matched it’s a beautiful wood.

Cocobolo is really nice, but Gabon Ebony is my favorite.

Well if this turns into a smooth win for smooth wood

- I vote in no favorite order for these options -

Bog Oak or the beer barrel charred oak

Bocote

or if you want some extra shimmer and grain pattern

Lace wood

Still holding out for jigged bone.

Wood options that have not been offered in years will not be available. They probably keep some standard wood in stock. The wood choices that we have seen recently will be the options.

So - potentially pretty staid and overused woods :( Ebony has the potential to be spectacular, all polished up, but as often as not, is just black.

* Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone * Jigged Bone *

^ My attempt as subliminal persuasion - Good huh ;)

Not too late for you smooth wood voters who want the safest choice to switch to micarta. As of right now, it would only take 108 of you to put micarta in the lead.

That would be an epic comeback, and would ensure you the safest, most consistent options.
:)

I thought about changing my vote from micarta since it’s not getting much love, but I think I’ve got to stick together with the other micarta lovers out there. Even if we don’t win. Solidarity brothers and sisters.

It's coming down to the wire...
I've been tempted by some of the persuasive arguments from the jigged bone camp. I'm not switching from smooth wood yet, but I am considering it. My fear is that if bone wins we will get a huge vote for saw cut and that's NOT what I would like. But if we could get GEC to do a really nice looking jigging and color, then that would really make the knife something special. But jigged bone is the "gamble" vote... Too many opportunities for a bad jigging choice and an unattractive color. I have a few hours to decide.

Have to agree with this John, would not switch to jigged bone because of the risk getting saw cut which is not appropriate for this knife.

Maybe too late in the process and possibly has already been brought up, but what about a barlow style bolster with “BF” on it with maybe an arrow through it? Oh, smooth wood!

I really don't have a problem with smooth wood. There are a few that I think would be great on this pattern like Cocobollo or Iron Wood. Like others who don't want certain jigging types, I am voting bone because of the overwhelming support of Ebony on the wood side.

If wood wins, hopefully many of the jigged bone voters will pick something other than Ebony for a bit of variety. Since Ebony is represented in many regular production runs.
