2019 GEC 29 Humpback/Stockyard Whittler Thread

Doh! I skipped the #93s and now the #29 preorders are done! The 29 looks like a fantastic knife!

Does anyone know if there are any still available to preorder through the distributors? I’d love a PM if you know about a distributor who isn’t fully subscribed. Thank you!
PM'd :)

I don’t really understand the usefulness of the punch, I am thinking the Maher & Grosch version with 3 blades is the best version.........

How heavy are these compared to a GEC 97? Three springs is a lot of metal.

When I carried a SAK, I used the punch all the time. But I was working then, and it seemed like there was always something I needed to poke, gouge, or scrape. The screwdrivers and the cap lifter saw plenty of use, too. These days, not so much. But I still like punches. I wish GEC would rerun the Cattle Baron or put the blade selection from the 29 onto the 53/54 frame. That would be something I'd be willing to Lolly Scramble to get.

I know exactly what you mean. A punch/awl is one of those those whose wide range of utility you don’t really appreciate until you have one with you. It’s much like a pocket flashlight in that respect.

The awls on my Victorinox Pioneers probably get used more often than the primary blades do.

I would rank it above the #93. The best jigging GEC has done shares a common denominator, @waynorth. The #15 above, #38 Orchard Gems, #48’s and the #93 are all very nice.

I think that ultimately the impact of jigging is dependent on the pattern it's placed on. I wouldn't rank any of those as higher or lower than each other due to this. The 38 Farmer's Jack that Lyle put out, Charlie's Rope Knives and his latest Lamb Foot are all superb jigging that really suit the pattern concerned. They, and one or two other examples all stand out in the landscape of jigging:cool:

Got my 29, and am very pleased. Any fears I had of a fat knife (due to 3 springs) have proven me foolish.

This is a huge winner in my book, and will make a great carry!

All three blades have half stops, and are snappy opening and closing. The main clip opens the easiest for me. I'm not good at the rating thing, but I'd give the clip a 5 or 6, and the punch & sheepfoot at a 7 or 8.

I compared my 29 to a 66 Calf Roper, as I considered that the most similar knife I possess, and most of us are familiar with.

I do not have a digital caliper, so had to eyeball these with my standard one. These are as close as I could get.

Closed length:
29 = 3.625"
66 = 3.453"

Thickness (this surprised me! The photo below is misleading due to bad lighting, I've measured multiple times:) Keep in mind the different handle materials as well):
29 = .516" (~33/64")
66 = .547" (~35/64")

Weight:
29 = 2.73 oz.
66 = 2.65 oz

Main clip length:
29 = 2.5"
66 = 2.5" (just under)

Sheepfoot:
29 = 2.25"
66 = 1.875"

3rd blade (29 punch, 66 spay):
29 = 2.25"
66 = 1.75"

Thank for the info Ryan, much appreciated. I missed out on the recent acrylic but there may be positive news in the days to come:)

Thank you for the nice comparison & specs. That was the exact knife I was hoping someone to compare it to. Thickness was my biggest concern.

This model has a lot going for it. I’m interested to see a shot of the springs if someone is inclined to share.

Each to his own!! AS a student of punches, I am delighted to see every creative punch that GEC comes up with. A caplifter on such a knife would be a misfit for such a traditional pattern. However M&Gs variation will be interesting indeed!!

This one looks interesting. Flat on one side and a convex edge on the other. Do any traditional/vintage examples with this design come to mind?

It so funny becuase I've been saying for years that the most ideal configuration is a clip, sheep, punch, but GEC never makes it. They made it on the 98 and I tried it, but it was so darn big! If they made that on a #35, man.....I could go to heaven. Why is a punch useless??? I can't tell you how often I'm tempted to prey something (light to medium) with my pocket knife, but I stop...fearing what will happen. With a punch, you can get a lot more frisky without worrying about.

A wise man once said, "Give me a traditional with a clip, sheep and punch and I can move the world."

I love a good awl/punch. I use them for all kinds of stuff. I actually broke the tip off the awl on my Texas Camp Knife :eek:

This particular material doesn't do it for me but I am pretty sold on the pattern at this point. Might have to grab a few along the way.
