2019 GEC 29 Humpback/Stockyard Whittler Thread

I'm sure I think this every time I get a new knife, but... this knife is gorgeous!

I just haven't decided if it's right for me or not. o_O Now, back to pondering while we wait for the next releases!

Does anyone have both a new #29 and a Black Box Winchester #3904 to do a photo comparison? I'm curious just how "the same" these two patterns really are. I know the blades are different, but I'd love to see the two frames next to each other. I, probably foolishly, sold my #3904 a year ago.

Thanks, Tim, it looks like the #29 is a little thinner and has an extra pin, top center. Otherwise, identical.

I understand the infamous quality control issues with the #3904 is what put the Black Box Cutlery Company out of business. They haven’t been heard from since that run.

Just got my coffeehouse acrylic in. No good pics yet but super happy. All the pulls feel fine and smooth, no rub, not a cloud in the sky. Crazy nice colour and depth to the scales in the sun. Had been carrying my Beer Scout prior and it doesn't feel offensively bigger.

If it has a fault it's that it is too nice!

Carried mine today for the first time and like it so far. Only implement used was the punch to ventilate the lid on my morning coffee, and it made the most perfect hole :)

If I had to pick something I don't like, it would be the half stops, but I can live with them. I do feel it would have been even better without them though.

Not sure if you're serious. There's no such company. Maybe you're thinking of Blue Grass Cutlery. They're still around as far as I know.

Blue Grass Cutlery obtained permission from the Olin Corporation to use the Winchester brand (which Olin owns). Blue Grass contracted with Queen Cutlery to make most of the Winchester knives. Utica also made some (Cast Bronze handles). Camillus may have also made some, but no one knows which ones.

The Winchester 3904 was made by Queen for Blue Grass in 1988 as part of what collectors refer to as "Black Box" series. Queen made Winchester knives at least until early 2000's. There were many models made after the 3904. Most of these knives were made during the Bill Howard era at Queen.

In short, your information is wrong.

Yes ironically I posted that around exactly the same time that the Blue Grass company re-emerged in the other thread. One of my favourite knife labels. I am very pleased by these developments and can’t wait to see what they produce.

Got my stag 29 today and it's just great. Finishing is excellent. Holding it made me realize how similar it is to the Geppetto. A little longer and a little slimmer, as if the Geppetto were stretched out. Of course it's 3 springs vs a split back. Weight is about the same, but I think that has to do with handle thickness.

Just got my Northfield #29 in Blood Red Bone and already know I need to get another one or two to keep in reserve. I was a bit surprised at how small this model is; for some reason I expected it to be much larger than it is. However after handling it for a few minutes I think this makes a perfect medium sized slipjoint. This little rascal is a winner.

On another note, I found my #29 has the best edge out-of-the-tube than any of my other GEC's. It is not as sharp as I would like but it certainly came with an adequate "working edge".
