2019 GEC 29 Humpback/Stockyard Whittler Thread

For those of you that have purchased versions of this pattern in different scales, do the later made versions seem to have stronger springs?
I thought I saw somebody say something like that in a comment somewhere.
I did not get any of the earlier production to compare with. I was a bit worried they would have weak pulls based on others reports but the two i received (snakewood and curly maple) are perfectly acceptable with firm pull and crisp snap on all blades.

What makes you say that?
Mike Latham explained it best...but it is a tedious process that doesn't really return any additional value or profit for GEC. As much as I appreciate the pins, my hunch is they were something GEC tried out at some point and then it caused more grief than it was worth. Folks complaining they didn't get a pin, someone sitting their for many hours pressing pins, etc.
So it is just a hunch. I assume they will still do it but maybe less frequently is my guess.

they look good - do you know if this run of stag is in limited supply?
Should be more available than the snakewood/bloodwood. I dont have the exact numbers but should be more a regular size run like the red jigged bone. Im not sure if they just made way less of the NF or if they have been partial deliveries up to this point.

Received my Snakewood and Red jigged bone Northfields today, both have excellent fit and finish and all blades have great snap and pulls, much better than the first grits with butter and molasses which has a weak main blade. I suspect that as a new pattern progresses in production the later ones will have any kinks worked out.
The jigging on the red jigged bone is excellent, much better than the production pictures showed.
The Snakewood is disappointing in that the wood is very plain, no snake to it, I suspect that this is why GEC cut the Snakewood production short, just did not have good Snakewood, I'll either sell it or make it my first Northfield carry knife. Probably should not buy a wood like Snakewood without seeing individual pictures.
I do like this pattern.

missed out on the Snakewood because of the snakewood/bloodwood fiasco. Very disappointed in GEC for that. However i did get a bloodwood and it is extremely handsome. As for the pattern and blade combination, the entire package is very hefty. Haven't weighed it, but I am fairly sure i'd enjoy it more without the punch layer, of which i'll never use anyway. Both the sheep foot and clip point edges are poorly sharpened, like GEC was infamous for 5 years ago, i hope mine isn't an accurate sample of the entire run in the factory sharpness department.

Goodness. GEC’s famed quality control has certainly taken a hit on this run.

On the plus side this red bone jigging is better (deeper) than normal

That red bone is beautiful!

I got a nicely figured snake

Must be my expectations don't mirror others, as I've bought (10) 29's so far & haven't found any complaints worth complaining about.... I think GEC has done an outstanding job on this run....

Well yes, if every knife you got was perfect you are entitled to point that out.

But it doesn’t mean the knife run overall is outstanding.

The price is now over $120. Even just based on photos, some of the snakewood examples I have seen should not be going on a knife sold for that price. Nor should some of the jigging examples.

Speaking as a massive GEC supporter, and the knives are beauties in every other way.

Since there are no written specifications, and only personal expectations to judge the knives by, my expectations have been met by all the 29's I've bought...…… I guess everyone's expectations on what a $120.00 knife should look like differ...…..

nice pics - looking forward to holding mine in hand - red jig bone is my fav cover and the many tubes I have of them are falling out of the box

I've been torn on this run. On one hand, I've enjoyed a much needed break, on the other, I worry that I've missed out. They have variations in my three favorite covers; red bone, Ebony, and Stag. Certainly doesn't make adhering to my resolve all that easier.

I am enjoying everyone's thoughts on this pattern though. If the cards go my way in the future, I may try one at some point.
