2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

When I put a Camel Bone 62 on reserve, it was with the hope that there might be something different than the expected Bananas. Even when it was discovered that some would be banana and some would be Goldenrod, I still expected that I would move mine as soon as I received it - yellow is simply not my color and I do not like the banana shield (though I am certainly happy that there are folks who do).

Well, it came as a bit of a shock to me but I actually very much like this 62 in Goldenrod Camel Bone with the square bar shield. I got one with very mellow coloring (almost a honey color) - it's barely darker than my knives with white bone. Of the limited number of knives with Camel Bone that have passed through my hands, this one is easily my favorite.

I am warming considerably to the 62 pattern - it carries so nicely and it is proving to be a superb pocket tool. Depending on how the Stag turns out, this one in Camel Bone might be my favorite of the bunch.

The first couple of pics are the closest to demonstrating the actual coloring.

That IS a nice color on that 62... while I'm not big on bananas (the shield, mostly), that is a pretty nice color for a pocketknife.

that's an interesting looking whiskey, as well... I'll have to check it out.

Nice! There’s a camel s-l-o-w-l-y making it’s way to me. Hoping it looks as good as yours!

@Pàdruig Thats a beautiful 62 and wonderful display of pictures. Now I’m even more excited for my Goldenrod camel bone to arrive

You Really needed the Snakewood!
Yes, I know... I should.... I'm a little on the fence about snakewood. When you find a nicely patterned specimen, they are really nice. I have an Otnat with good grain in it. I've seen some that look pretty bland, and those don't interest me. I know that natural handles are going to have a fairly wide variation.. it's just that this particular wood is only attractive to me in the more "figured" state. Now, if I could pick and choose the one I want.... I'd likely break down and add it to the group.... I'm so weak....

I’m supposed to be on hiatus until my finances stabilize but I couldn’t resist the banana. It’s rare I even am fortunate enough to see the email in time on things like this so I pounced.

The nanner bone and shield isn’t really my cup of tea but with that being said I think it fits this pattern perfectly

Okay you enablers, help me choose... Goldenrod or Maroon Micarta and no, “both” is not the right answer.

Goldenrod if handpicked is an option.

Is it just me or is the banana upside down? Shouldn’t it be flipped so it reads like the badge on the red jigged bones with the blades at the top? Maybe I don’t know what way a banana is supposed to be placed? Haha

The maroon sounds a lot more intriguing to me since some say it's very dark, all but black in most lighting. If it was more like a double red I doubt I'd be too keen on it.

Makes me wonder if anybody has had a black micarta SFO shipped back from Mike's Knives...? I thought black really suited the slim profile of the 62.

I think your asking about nanner placement to the wrong folks :p:D

Dylan, my thoughts on camel bone are the same as those you’ve expressed previously: I generally find the washed out look (like the dye didn’t take) unattractive and have never really understood the appeal.

That said, the knife you’ve got there looks fantastic! Maybe a lighter color dye is the way to go with camel bone, ‘cause on that knife, it just works.

So I got two votes each for Micarta and Goldenrod, but then I noticed the Goldenrod blades are satin which I prefer to polished should I actually use the knife. Good enough of a closer for me, Goldenrod en-route. I’m playing the camel bone lottery though, have to wait and see what I get.

I understand the gripe with camel bone- it doesn’t take dye very well. I have a camel bone #92 and it’s a middling example for what I would consider a decent dye job for the material. I like it as a material, and I think the dye inconsistencies add a lot of character, but I’d also be fine with smooth white camel bone offerings.

I definitely support GEC’s endeavor for interesting cover choices.

I don't believe the banana shield "upside down" is by accident. In hand the 62 has a curve, quite similar to a banana, so the shield is set with the curve.

I received a goldenrod camel bone today. Its absolutely beautiful. Although the texture is polished/shiny, it still feels grippy. The pulls are heavier than the other two I've had (red jigged bone or micarta. The swedge is so subtle on these, excellent job. The Northfield logo is simple and not overdone. Both blades are sharp. F&F is excellent- everywhere.

With the color, vintage looking bar shield this one is an absolute classic, and looks like a new knife from 60 years ago. I love it.

If you have a chance, or are on the fence, I recommend it highly.
