2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

I bought a Blue Camel Bone #62 last week and was not happy with the coloring. It had a very pronounced dark blue stripe on each side and almost pure white on the edges. It looked like a blue racing strip on a white car. I sent it back to DLT and decided to roll the dice again and ordered a Ripe Banana.

I just received it and couldn't be happier. This is only my second GEC and my first knife with real bone handles. I didn't realize that bone could be a translucent as this is, especially at the edges. The front is a little lighter, but the back is fabulous. Looks way better in person than my pics show.

I don't see #23 Trappers on the production schedule. Where were these announced? Did they also announce blade types and handle materials? Thanks for any info.
I am an Oregon Knife Collectors Association and Allegheny Mountain Knife Collectors member. OKCA has a knife show twice a year. OKCA announced a #23 Jumbo Trapper club knife for April 18th, back in late November. I have two different club knives paid/pre-ordered. Today , GEC posted production part pictures. "Brazilian Cherry wood" I am sure GEC will apply a beaver shield on those. A picture of a beefy drop point blade for the two blade knives. There were some white micarta un-dyed scales too. GEC#23 single blade , two blades , slipjoint , lock-back , bull-lock or liner lock. I am excited for #23 Jumbo Trapper knives. The Oregon club knives have to be ready for the April 18th knife show. So the #23 Trapper Run will be next.

My keeper-
Lighting sucks but its nice. Pretty even on both sides. I wanted a lighter one. I hand picked it.

The blades aren't soft or firm, F&F and W&T is great. At first I thought the main blade was going to not open fully, it just felt springy or something opening it to half stop, but it was fine and tight, and after a few opens and closes its great.

This thing exudes "Classic Knife" to me.

It just struck me... A first?
A person could potentially own a #62 in all FOUR of the GEC lines; GEC, Tidioute, Northfield, and Farm n Field.:thumbsup:

I didn't even think about that....alright, I need a F&F Whittler and I'll have the set.

Not sure why but I pulled the trigger on a banana shield 62...should be here tomorrow. I'm really liking the goldenrod and I was already planning on a stag.

I might as well give up any pretenses and go after the whole set.

Is it just me or is the banana upside down? Shouldn’t it be flipped so it reads like the badge on the red jigged bones with the blades at the top? Maybe I don’t know what way a banana is supposed to be placed? Haha

I think they were placed that way so the banana would curve around that center pin. Otherwise it wouldn’t fit (at least not as a centered shield). But yes, on other knives they’ve done with the banana shield, I believe it was turned the other way.

It’s not the first — they’ve done the #99 in all four brands — but it’s certainly a rare thing.

And here is the current stable of pattern 62. I won't be holding on to all of them, but it's been fun to get my hands on these. Can't wait for the carvers.

Choice selection there, surprised you're thinking of parting with any of them. The Snakewood has particularly good grain, very satisfying.

Whatever our tastes, GEC has made great efforts with this pattern to offer both interesting materials and shields for what is a classic type of gent's Penknife. Whilst I'm not a fan of the Banana shield; i do like that Camel Bone, looks like agéd Ivory Bone, just right for this pattern; admire the complexity & skill required to inlet that shape, or all of these shields for that matter.

Thanks. The Snakewood is the clear favorite for me.

Agreed that this has been an impressive run. Really great options, and executed so well.
