2020 GEC #62 Easy Pocket Congress and Pocket Carver Thread

Will you guys carry your carvers for EDC you think? Or only reserve them for carving?

I know we're on the Carvers now, but as usual I'm a week or so behind. My stag arrived today :)

Your photos are exceptional, Rachel, showing the carver in all it's glory!
Thank you!

I like to carry a couple pocket knives, and I like to pair them so that I always have a straight edged blade and one with a belly. I could see this knife sharing a pocket with something like a spear blade jack.

The Carvers are just arriving, but it's never too late for such a fine example in stag.

So I got mine, too! Proud Dad moment- my son Benjamin (turning 2 tomorrow!) was eager to see what was in the box. I asked him, “What do I use to open the box?” And he goes “knife!”. When I pulled out the tube he must have seen the picture and he said, “knife!”. (He already has a SAK Tinker set aside for him, but I got him a toy Victorinox for his birthday so he has one to use.)

Amazingly tight fit on the blades, and I’m not convinced the secondaries don’t knock slightly on the fat portion of the swedge on the main; I will probably try to open the main before opening/closing the secondaries, but it might not be necessary. I put my A+ effort edges on all of the blades, as I don’t think mine came as sharp as Jiki Jiki found his. outstanding fit and finish. Remarkable... it’s truly a work of art.

Mine will be exclusively for carving. My EDC rotation and habits will not change.

While I was sharpening I was thinking a lot about how I might carry this #62, then I read @Wharn’s question and I loved that someone else had a similar thought regarding practicality of EDC.

I probably have other knives I will be carrying more, like my Churchill or Eureka Jack... or even my Queen #48 split back. These are what I consider great knives for most tasks, and I can also whittle with them successfully.

THEN, there’s my silly idealism concerning pocket knives... bear with me... I think of them as multipurpose tools for all your (reasonable!) cutting needs. As such I hate to reserve any of them for whittling. It just feels to me like I’m not using the folder for it’s true purpose.

When I think of whittling with a pocket knife, I think of General Grant sitting on a stump spontaneously whittling with his *general* (hah!) purpose pen knife during the Battle if the Wilderness.

That said, I think the best reason to own a 62 Pocket Carver is it’s portability. I never take my carving fixed blades out of the house. Also, if I’m honest, the majority of the time a <2” wharnecliffe will do the job just as well as a 3” clip for what I need to cut on a daily basis. I’ll carry it, and more likely when I know I’m going to be somewhere with a stick and some time to kill.

I’ve always liked the idea that you could hand someone a pocket knife and some found wood and they could make something with it.

In a counter point to your statement (which I very much agree with knife+wood=whittle)even when I whittle with my EDC/general pocket knife I save one blade (usually carry a multi) for whittling. The general blade gets to do the work. Cutting banding, shrink wrap, opening cartons, breaking them down after and so on. Due to this the edge gets beat daily, shrink wrap actually rolls an edge very quickly. Since I carry two knives on a normal day I am in r8shell r8shell s camp of a bellied and a straight edge. Now one will just be the PC.

As with anything though everyone needs to carry what works for them.

That is a pretty nice piece of Stag my friend . But there is probably another side to it Mike ????? Hint Hint Hint

Harry

Sorry Harry. Was in a hurry to get home from work and eat :)

Other side:

Has a bit of a dish on that side, making the grip quite comfy without being too chunky

Mineral oil flush, and a bit of a tickle on the sharpmaker, and I'm looking forward to having it in the pocket tomorrow :)

That reminds me of a rifle with a "palm swell" at the grip... makes it nestle into your palm perfectly....
I, too have amazed at the quality of stag I've seen on these. I have seen some pics of a few that looked mismatched, but for the most part, GEC did a bang-up job with these..

I'm still awaiting mine, but most likely it'll see casual EDC duties, and if I'm able to sneak outside on a lunchbreak out in back of the building near the woods, I'll be able to sit down and doodle some patterns on anything I might find laying around out there. That'll work for me!
