2020 GEC #74 Mustang Thread

Well this BP came yesterday. It had a gap by the spring near the bolster. Flushed it out this morning, ton of compound came out, and the gap is all gone. 6 on the pull and very smooth.

Is it normal for ironwood to have small cracks in the knots, or imperfections in the wood? I’m used to cocobolo (open grain) and ebony (typically tight and smooth, very rarely with imperfections to the grain).

I’d like to mine the collective knowledge here on what to expect with ironwood.

Thanks!

A scotchbrite pad from the kitchen sink works perfect for refinishing the bolsters. Both of mine were scuffed just from being in the tube. Not a fan of the non polished approach they are taking, including the satin blades.
The green scotchbrite pads?

My black plum had a scuffed bolster (minor issue, very fixable) a one inch long gap that you could see light through (tolerable), and significant blade wobble (not tolerable). I was kinda shocked, by far, the worst GEC I have received and I am in no way a GEC hater and it won’t stop me from buying more in the future. I’m glad this was a good run for all who got one and I’m enjoying all the great posts and pictures. Just wanted to share my story. I’d post picks but it is already on its way back.

I was immediately pleased with my Black Plum and I didn't do a very thorough inspection. Seeing your report, I had to go look at it again to see if there were any gaps or wobble (admittedly, I don't often check the latter on a new knife).

No gaps on mine and no wobble - so big sigh of relief here. That said, it sounds like yours should have never left the factory - I'd be rather disappointed as well.

I have to say I'm surprised at some of the stuff that gets by QC at GEC considering the low numbers they produce.

I would have to agree. I understand they aren't fully staffed right now but it is still a small run by comparison and I would think better attention would be warranted.

Mine had a scuff on the bolster too(Brown burlap). No big deal. But, what did bother me a little are the long horizontal scratches along the entire length of the blade. This has happened to me before so I am not totally shocked. From wiping it down at the factory. I just wish they could rethink this process. It will be a user, so I can live with it. The bolster I will leave alone too, because if I remove that scuff, I will have a mirror bolster, and I really like the satin.

Examining my Black Plum again, I noticed the same long scratches on my blade too. They will disappear with a bit of patina but it still is somewhat irksome for an otherwise pretty perfect knife.

From my understanding, all knots are inherently unstable no matter the wood. I would guess what you’re seeing is normal, but hard to say without actually seeing it.

I was hoping for one with lighter wood and some contrasting darker streaks. I never expected this though. Thanks, Mike! :) Both covers are actually a closer match in shading than the pics are showing. I'll blame the camera's dithering in the early evening outdoor light... Also thought I'd be all ready to shine up the bolsters and shield, but I just might not be in such a hurry do do so right away...let's how long that lasts. :D

Nice grain, but that cut-out is pretty rough. Mine isn't fantastic either, but not as much gap as that.

I felt it was fair to post this up, given that I’ve taken Queen to task for this exact thing in the past as a mark of their slipping quality. I have to admit that I did not expect this from GEC, especially on a run of a frame that everyone and their brother were waiting for to come back around.

It seems like QC has indeed taken a slip in the wrong direction in the last few runs.
