2020 GEC #74 Mustang Thread

Two beauties by any standard Ron! Congrats!
Thanks a lot my friend! :)

I agree ^
Thank you! :)

Excellent Pics of two beautiful knives...thanks for posting!:cool: I now get to see how the stag looks on these. Makes it worth the wait. If I can wait.
I’m really happy with my stag. I haven’t seen any other examples except the factory photos, but they showed some nice stag! :)

Handsome pair!
Thanks! :)

Very nice! Happy to hear you had no issues, enjoy!
Thank you! :)

I'll only comment on the stag Ron. If they're all like that, then GEC is the master. Enjoy my friend.
Thanks Alan! I’m very pleased with the stag! I hope you get a good one! :)

Thanks. I saw the ones from KSF today and they looked good to me. I had to buy mine blind but I'm confident. Should know by the end of the week

I bought mine blind too! I was proud to just be able to get them! Looking forward to your great photos Alan!

Mine just showed up. Overall they are OK. The pull and snap are perfect. The pattern itself is one of the finest GEC makes. If I have to be really nit picky (which I am) the micarta has a slight gap between the micarta and bolster on the back side (I can live with it), and the ironwood has some marks in the wood under the bolster. I am a little disappointed with the ironwood, but that’s probably because I was really excited and had my hopes too high.

Those tiny voids by the bolster are just the nature of ironwood. I have worked with ironwood and found that they will appear at random while sanding the wood down, no indication of where or when they will surprise you. It is the nature of the material.

So, I didn't intend to buy any from this Mustang drop and therefore didn't sign up for any reserves. Once I started seeing the production photos, coupled with the fact that I didn't have any 73s or 74s in my quiver, I changed my mind and jumped in with both feet. I got lucky with a couple of dealer drops and landed these guys. The burlap micarta has been in my pocket since last week when it arrived and I like it a lot - even the shield has grown on me.

Hard to pick a favorite in that group. I’m guessing it’s the stag.

I had my phone in my hand when I got the notification email that one of the reputable GEC vendors posted their stag Mustangs yesterday. I had a look and hot damn they were beautiful! Way too small for my hand though. I hope a few of those who frequent this thread managed to score, and I look forward to seeing the photos in the days to come.

Here’s something sort of unusual I noticed on my two new #74’s. The model number on the tang is always partially obscured by the bolster. At full-open and half-open, every number but the 7 is approximately half hidden (give or take a millimeter). At 45° and 135°, you can see the 745, but the 120 is almost completely obscured.

Does it matter? Not at all. :D I just noticed it and thought it was funny. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this on any other GEC knife (but I’m not about to go looking through all of mine to confirm). I will say that on my 2017 #74 Stallions, the tang stamp is fully visible, but those had the old GEC TIW stamp (on one line) instead of the two-line GEC CARBON stamp they’re using now. Anyone else ever notice this in any other models? Just curious. ;)

I've got a 721111 whic only the very top of the numbers is visible when open. Upon closing just a little past 90 deg. You can see the 7 most of the 2 and maybe 2/3 of the first 1, the last three 1's are never fully seen, only the tops. Cyclops is the top line, Steel works is the second, and the model number bottom. Kind of funny.

Does anyone know how much the ironwood sold for on the exchange a few minutes ago? I want to know what the market price is going to be for these... it will help me cool my jets somewhat if it's just stupid expensive.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why sellers erase the selling price once it's sold.... has it become a big secret at that point? "OH NO!! Don't let anyone see what I sold this for!" The exchange should be a resource for members wanting to buy a knife. Take away the price, and you got nothing....

rant off....

It listed at $185, which is less than the big auction site, but not the worst or the best deal I've seen individuals offer. I will say that I always leave my price up, but even then I don't always sell the knife for what is listed. Sometimes I work out a deal with the buyer for less. However, I appreciate knowing what a knife is being sold for because it does help estimate the market value and it also shows seller transparency, which is a plus in my book.

I missed out on the ironwoods and i'm determined to get a stag so I reached out to one of the dealers that sells on the bay. I asked him if there was anyway I could be notified when he listed, and to my surprise a few days later he contacted me telling me had a stag 74. He told me his price was $250!!! Call me silly but I was prepared to spend the extra money so we went forward with deal. Up until this point we had communicated through Ebay and he asked me to text him. We started talking through text and he asked for my shipping address and informed me that it would be $250 PayPal F&F only. I told him I was uncomfortable using anything other than G&S and asked if that would be an issue. He said no problem if i wanted to add the fees. WHAT?!?!?!? At this point I politely passed on the deal. Sorry for the book, but I thought this was worth sharing since we're talking about market value. Keep in mind this is a dealer that is listed on GEC's site. I should have passed when he told me his price but that FOMO's got a hold on me.
