2022 #77 Yankee Barlow thread

My Stag arrived today and I have to say, it doesn't really win any beauty contests (I think I may have let my hopes get a little too high - it happens). That said though, it has color and it has texture, it is also quite comfortable in the hand - which is pretty much all I ask for in Stag.

Swap ya in a heartbeat for mine I posted earlier. Yours has much better color. Nice one.

I’ve done a little research into olive and it appears it can have a tendency to crack if not probably cared for.

For anyone planning on using and carrying their olive wood, any tips or suggestions on how to care for it?
I had this very issue, a small crack from one of the pins, no big deal, but did not want it to get worse or more cracks appearing. I tried something and have not had an issue since, but i just want say this is my experience only. Olive wood will darken to some degree with whatever you apply to it, and will darken over time with carry and use, so i applied a couple of light coats of Raw Linseed oil, let them sink in and dry to the touch, this time will vary depending on your climate/season it is applied. Then i applied 2 thin coats of renwax, but i let it cure overnight before applying the second coat, then let the second coat cure overnight. The wood darkened a bit, but not too bad, and i have not had an issue since. But as stated, this is my experience only.
