2024 GEC 811224

Modern Cutlers don't have either the patience, or the technology to do a full mirror polish!! It used to be called a "crocus" finish; a bright, mirror polish, done on hard wheels!! Not possible on the soft "rag" wheels of today!! It would add a lot of cost!!
I read about crocus finish, but I think I missed the part about hard wheels being used. How is that even possible? 🤔 😮 For I don't expect cutlers of the past to have stones of a few thousands grit.

Some interesting information I have found about Crocus finish:

"The old Sheffield finish was Crocus (Iron Oxide) on seal or walrus skin covered wooden wheels with hide glue on Crocus powder (flower) at about 800 rpm. Some say only Seal/Walrus skin can reproduce that finish."

Here is also a link to interesting information:

GEC probably sorted the black and streaked Gabon Ebony handles and dealers are selling them separately as Gabon Ebony and Streaked Gabon Ebony.
I think the streaked version will be quite unique and probably a smaller number of these knives were made. What do you think?

Whatever next, streaky bacon and very streaky bacon?

Coming to a butchers near you soon. 😁

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Canal Street might have been the exception to the general rule -- they featured a crocus finish on many of their models. [Edit: assuming that "mirror polish" and "crocus" are interchangeable terms]

I will check with Eric!! (Calling ea42 ea42 !!) They did a nice polish, but not a hard-wheel crocus, I don't think!!⁉️⁉️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
Perhaps my bad, Charlie -- I know that Canal Street did self-described "Mirror Polished Blades." My presumption was that this equated to "crocus" polish -- but, I'm no expert. That's why you're here... 🤣
