6 New Zero Tolerance Folders Announced at the 2016 SHOT Show

We were talking about the popularity is manual action thumb stud opening knives vs assisted knives not multi-tools and friction folders.

You claimed it was settled that a sub $50 knife needed to be A/O to sell well. I pointed out a number of manual knives that sell quite well and so you brought up overall sales volume. I then pointed out that neither of the two companies that have the greatest sales volume have any kind of A/O folder in their lineups and then you changed the parameters of your argument.

^^ I would venture to guess the production numbers of the RAT and tenacious combined don't hold a candle to the Kershaw Leek model alone....Unfortunately none of those 3 companys share information related to sales volumes. I believe one of the points Scurvy is getting at is in regard to NEW offerings....not existing ones. In that regard he would be correct...even Spyderco has begun to offer more bearing flippers due to demand. In any rate its a silly point to continue to argue about in a thread about new ZT offerings....which look great by the way (Even without a filler tab....which is a Hinderer feature, not a Rexford one)

All of these knives looked wayyy better in video.

The 456 is my favorite

It's a too heavy for my tastes though.

It would have really completed the overall package if they replaced the stamped clip with a machined To clip.

It seems m390/CPM 20cv/ cts 204p

Is set to be the new s30v of 2016

A nice titanium clip would've been nice on the 0456 but more importantly I wish they had skeletonized the thick titanium frame to bring the weight down from 6.6 ounces to say 4.5-5.0 ounces! It's only a 3.25" blade.

M390/CTS-204P/20CV have been the super stainless steel the past 2-3 years. I remember back in 2005 it was S30V!

Agreed.
It's seems that art out weighs function.

But dang I bet it feels great in the hand.

And yeah that steel has been very popular.

2016 seems to be a year were its alot more available and affordable then the past.

I think ZT is being faithful to the Jens Anso design for the 0456. He makes them THICK! I have a great high-quality Boker Minos made in Solingen, Germany designed by Anso that weighs 6.49 ounces with a 3.125" blade that's 0.20" thick! I'm sure I'll relent and get a 0456. His designs have great ergonomics and I love that blade style for everyday use.

As for M390/CTS-204P/20CV blade steel ZT has had them in the 0562CF and 0620CF since their announcement at the 2014 SHOT Show and they go for a street price of $240. They started out with M390 but due to availability of M390 they switched to CTS-204P last year.

Oh, the Jens Anso is the 220
The 456 is the sinkavich design

You're right. In my quest to try and justify the weight of the 0456 I mistook it for a Jens Anso. Still, I'm thinking the titanium and blade on the 0456 have to be THICK!

Why is ZT making so many small knives LOL?...

I'm still waiting for the XL 0300 with upgraded blade steel.

Long live the old school ZT models. ;):foot:

Militarized beasts are the way to go.:thumbup::thumbup:

The new stuff does look nice though.

The 450 is the closest to small enough, and it's still a little too big.

I personally think ZT whiffed on the new releases this year. I think they're just a bit too funky/quirky for me. I recently just dived in to the land of ZT, picking up a copy of all the hinderer designed ZT's (550, 560, 562). I love the simple designs, and nice ergos, and all around look. The 452cf has me intrigued as well, sleek lines and simple design. I don't know, maybe I feel ZT is trying too hard...

Personally, I feel like Benchmade won this round out of all manufacturers. The 928 and 551-1 will be in my collection very soon.

Man, I'm personally just so bumbed. I was just starting to think ZT is my favorite knife company, and then they released those. Seems like I'll just be buying more hinderer zt's and buying custom scales and hardware to keep me busy until 2017.

I consider the 0450 as the best modern industrial folder ever. but these new offerings are somewhat disappointing, except for the nice (but maybe redundant) 0450CF...
so no new ZT's for me this year.

I couldn't disagree more (respectfully of course)
Benchmade was real late to the flipper game....and when they finally started coming out they were unimpressive imho. This years BM offerings are just more variations on what they have always done, with flippers and upgraded steel and some different colors. Personally I think ZT is the only manufacturer trying to do something different each year. A few years back on this forum people complained that ZTs were all too big and bulky, they remedy that with a line of smaller knives and people here say "What happened to all the beefy folders". Now this year they bring back some beef and people are whining about filler tabs, blade profiles, and no thumbstuds. Seems to me like ZT is always a year ahead of the curve....so when Benchmade or Spyderco finally bring out a ball bearing framelock flipper people are all "WOW, That's a gamechanger". Just cant please everyone...but at least some are trying. There is a reason they use a lot of bearing knives and flippers without studs....because they sell well. Don't like this years crop....fine, more for me...but to say they missed the mark? I'm sure their sales will prove that to be inaccurate.

I only have one Spyderco and one Benchmade left in my collection for a reason....their new offerings don't do anything for me.

With the offerings this year ZT has certainly plugged some holes in the 3.8"-3.9" blade lengths with 0804CF and 0909. They have plenty in the 3.5"-3.6" range and 3.25" blade length categories. However, they still have only a single folder with a 3" or under blade and that's the 0900 from last year!

My neck hurts from nodding at your post, Rival, but that last part explains me perfectly too. Let's really face facts: there are only so many overarching ways to put together a handle and a sharp piece of metal. For those who appreciate traditionals, nail nicks, thumb studs and whatnot, then more power to you. There damn sure are also plenty of people who want to buy the same models year in and year out; Benchmade's catalog is loaded with em, and also with small variants of each. But the studies show that flippers are where peoples' heads are at these days (I'm one of them), and ZT is filling that need while also thankfully pushing aesthetic boundaries of what a knife is "supposed" to look like. I'll be picking up a 0095BW for sure. :D

He would be correct about A/O knives selling better? As I'll cheerfully bet you that the newly released Victorinox Walker will easily outsell every one of the Cryo models combined.

The 0095 would be a nice new design if it weren't for a knife called the kershaw launch 1. It's just a modified all titanium flipper version of that knife. Which isn't a bad design, it's just not new. I can't do all titanium knives though, if they came out with a CF or G10 variant, I'd try one. I like my traction. The 0804 kind of looks like a sad knife, or a knife with down syndrome. Flat along the top and kind of droopy. Maybe if they come out with a stonewash version( or black wash), you'd be able to see some of the features of the knife. Dlc hides so much.

^^why keep bringing up victorinox?? You may be right, but they arent really in the same market demographic....ultimately neither you nor i have access to sales metrics, so its a stupid argument....which is what i was trying to point out.

When I first saw the 0456 I immediately told myself "I need this knife"

then I saw the weight and said "never mind"

Now I'm lusting all over the 0095...

Well, I've been watching for the 2016 models for the last month, and I'm kind of underwhelmed. I can appreciate the desire for innovation, but the aesthetics on these models don't appeal much to me. I much prefer the lines of the 0562 and 0392.

I was dreaming of a wharncliffe that wasn't a limited run. Guess I'll have to keep dreaming.
