6 New Zero Tolerance Folders Announced at the 2016 SHOT Show

What about the Spyderco flippers? The hole doesn't compromise anything at all. What an absurd statement.

The first thing compromised by a spyderco flipper is the look, they are FUGLY. I havent seen one yet that doesnt look out of place....because Sal forces the spyder hole on every design whether its functional or not. This year they just slapped a flipper on a Delica and called it a new design....but I'm sure nothing was compromised in doing so:rolleyes:. Of course we are talking about prefrence in design in function...and each has their own i guess.

Southard, Positron and Mantra 2 flippers keep the folder nice and narrow in width. In the latter two the hole is mostly decorative.

Domino, Dice and Mantra flippers have wider blades to accommodate the functional hole. Personally, they're just too wide for my preferences.

Not sure if its been covered yet, but does anyone know when the new kershaws/ZTs are supposed to start arriving in stores?

I have yet to handle a Spyderco flipper that flipped as well as a ZT. Southard, Rubicon and the Domino vs the 0900 and 0801s110v specifically.

The answer is still, "as soon as you see them for sale in stores." KAI does not give release dates. The reason is because if a delay happens the consumer base seems to all cry at once. I'd guess it is to prevent world wide flooding and nerd rage attacks.

Well, to be fair, one company just started making flippers, the other has been doing it for well over 10 years and has literlallyabout 100 models as practice. Apples to oranges.

True but even KAI's attempts at flippers with a secondary deployment have been lackluster.

Again, not in my experience. The 0560s I've had have opened perfectly well with the thumbstud. The 0560 I have in for sharpening right now also opens perfectly with the thumbstud. The 0700 I had flipped perfectly and opened with the thumbstud perfectly, using that magnificent Blur-esque stud. Even the 0300 and 0562 I had could be opened without real issue with the thumbstud, despite the thumbstud being placed almost right against the handles when closed (the 0300 was the easier of the two, due to the textured stud). I don't really know why you have found ZTs with thumbstud secondary opening to be difficult.

Go back and read my prior post. The issue isn't the secondary deployment, it's the fact that it compromises the the flipping action.

I loved the 0560 but it wasn't the greatest flipper. At the time it was fine but compared to the current gen ZT flippers, it's not even close.

Flipper action in productions knives have come a long long way in the last few years. All the threads used to be about how to use a proper technique so you can open your flippers without flicking your wrist. They've come so far since then.

If you can't hand your knife to someone who has never flipped a knife before and they can't get the knife to deploy fully, it's not up to snuff. The knife should fly open every time without thought our technique or experience.

That type of action used to only be available in customs from some of the best flipper makers out there, RJ Martin, Andre Thornburn, Ray Laconico etc but it has finally trickled down to the masses.

That's the new standard and adding a thumb stud/disc/hole compromises that.

ZT has moved away from secondary opening mechanism of their flippers in the recent past. Even on the 0562 those are not thumb studs but blade stops and part of the reason they're so short (Jim McNair explained it at the 2014 SHOT Show). You may be able to open your 0562 using those blade stops because yours has a softer detent. Since last year's production folders ZT has made their detents ever stronger. This has pros and cons. It takes them a while to break-in and that's why people have had issues specially when pressing on the lockbar. Once broken in they're very smooth and fire open!

I have found non-knife people can rarely flip a non-assisted knife no matter how well it flips. I do understand what you're saying and accept that you believe secondary opening features make flipping worse, but I disagree that it is a necessary compromise.

Yeah, the 0562 is definitely not made to use the thumb stud but it can be done. The 0700, 0560, and 0566s have flipped perfectly well and have had functional thumbstuds in my experience. Wish I still had one of each, but they have all come and gone like most knives I buy. I still think the 0560/0561 is one of the best all around production folding knives ever.

Watch a non-knife person handle a Thorburn or a Martin one day...or a ZT0900
Heck, I have yet to handle any of those! I really thought about getting an 0900, but now I'm thinking the 0456 would be better if I do get a knife of that kind.

The 450 is the closest to small enough, and it's still a little too big.

How is that too big? What's your max folder size for daily carry; a case peanut? LOL.:p

It looks kind of like a tiny folding filet knife... So bland looking as well since the hardware, scales and blade all blend together. (I know I'm not the only one that feels this way:rolleyes::foot:) That blended look cheapens the overall design IMHO.

Ah well, I 'll keep on waiting till the good ole' ZT reemerges from the trendy gentleman's knife maker it has become. ;):foot:

It could be a combination of personal preference and local knife laws in the case of the 0450 being a little too big for manowar669! Remember there are localities where the blade length is limited to 3", 2.75" or even 2"! Plus, some people just like carrying lighter/smaller EDC all the time or on occasion.

In person, 0450 looks much nicer. It has a two-tone blade (stonewashed & satin finish), nicely stonewashed titanium, polished pivot and red standoffs fro a pretty reasonable $160 street price.

ZT has gone beyond the initial old all big, black, heavy and super-beefy folders. ZT 0909 is pretty much it now but don't forget 0900 which is a pocket tank! Actually, they're all pretty tough but just don't look it.

The ZT website has now corrected the following to agree with the ZT 2016 CATALOG:

  • 0456: Catalog MSRP is $300.00 vs. was $275.00 on the website.
  • 0450CF: Catalog blade length is 3.25" vs. was 3.5" on the website
  • 0220: Catalog MSRP is $285.00 vs. was $275.00 on the website

I love the 0804, I think it's real nice. I preordered it from GPK last night actually because I guess they're due in on Friday! I also bought the lionsteel TM1 but was definitely not a fan. So returning that will be definitely good for my wallet with the 0804 running around

It looks like almost all of the 6 new ZT folders announced at the 2016 SHOT Show will be at ZT dealers by late this week! The exception seems to be 0456.

Damn it. That was hardly any time to save $.

What new ZT is everyone getting first? For me it will be the 0804 followed closely by the 0450cf.
