#77 Barlow 2016 - What configuration would you like?

I totally agree Rob. Lignin vitae is a tough wood and would match well with a tough knife. I think it was traditionally used in lawn bowl balls and other lawn game hardware. A dark greenish brown wood.

I also really like the yellow rose series but a shield on a barlow? sacrilege!! maybe the rose in the bolster instead of the NF...

KP, I like my Barlows without shields, too. However, the Yellow Rose series are identified mostly by the shield. And, again, there is precedence for a shielded Barlow from one of the most famous of Barlows, the Russell.

As to the idea of a rose stamp vs a NF stamp on the bolsters, that would increase the cost... new stamp die, etc. Not sure Mike would be willing to do that.

It's just an idea, admittedly selfish on my part, to have one of the handle materials in the next run to be part of the Yellow Rose series. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I doubt they would see much shelf time... or even make it to the shelf :D

There are a couple woods that would compel me to get this knife regardless of any other specs: Lignum Vitae, palo santo ... And probably ironwood. It sounds like it's going to a neat one no matter what the final form is.

While I'm generally a fan of the yellow rose series & smooth yellow bone, I can't imagine owning a knife with a rose stamped bolster. Blood wood looks fantastic on the recent 85s & would probably be a winner on a barlow, IMO.

Easy open option would be nice, as would Bloodwood...

I agree on the easy open notch. The 77 has strong springs, so an EO notch would be nice. And please keep feeding me with those glorious canvas micarta scales! I also love the iron bolsters and steel liners.

As far as blades go, the new scandi grind would be very sweet. I prefer a straight edge on one of the blades of 2-blade models. Would a secondary Wharncliffe be a good fit?

Or if you wanted to have some real fun, how about a secondary electrician's blade, ala TL-29? That should

Being truthful Mike, it'll be pretty hard to match the awesomeness of the 2015 Barlow. That is just a crazy good knife. So much perfection in that knife. A incredibly complete design. My 2-blade canvas micarta is one of the few slipjoints that I could happily EDC for the rest of my life. It's that good.

EO notches work nice on spears. I feel that sheep foot blades don't need them. The great thing about an EO notch is it could be done later and customized by the individual.

I think green canvas micarta would be unique but a huge hit. I have been loving the way the natural micarta had been coming out though. Or ivory m icarta☺

Mike, I am just thankful to hear that there will be another run of these. Here is a few ideas that may have already been brought up. I haven’t had the time to read the thread yet.

All Steel
All long pull
Single clip
Single sheepfoot

African Blackwood of course.
Autumn Gold in that dark color of spear 77s but this time with a sawcut finish and the edges smoothed a bit.
Ivory smooth bone
Rough cut or smooth Rams Horn and Black Buffalo Horn

Would a secondary Wharncliffe be a good fit?

It's so crazy it just might work. :D

I know that some people are against using blades like the wharncliffe that aren't traditional to the barlow pattern. It would be nice if we could always stay true to the classics, but manufacturers 100 years ago didn't have the foresight to make a knife for the IT professional. :p I'd prefer a knife that fits my lifestyle more than one that adheres strictly to tradition.

Rough cut or smooth Rams Horn and Black Buffalo Horn

Yes please.

Scandi spear with a coping or wharnie secondary. EO notch. Denim micarta, blood wood, snake wood, smooth bone...

Based on the recent 85s, I "really, really, really" like the Scandi saber spear blade. That blade with a wharncliffe secondary does sound really nice.
The scandi saber could be a theme for the year.

A lot of requests for Scandi Sabre, and a wharncliffe secondary sounds great. I think an EO notch would be nice. EO would make the '16 unique from prior runs, and easy to open the Scandi Sabre on stiff 77 springs.

Seems like covers almost have to include red saw cut and ebony, but what about the other cover choices?

Lignum Vitae or Bloodwood? -- I'd prefer Lignum Vitae...we have had several Bloodwood options recently.

Denim or Natural Canvas? -- I'd prefer Natural over the Denim. Denim seems like a Northwoods option and Mike's runs seem more fitting of Natural in my opinion.

Stag has been in every run. Maybe we can go with polished this time?

Smooth bone in Autumn Gold, Rotten Banana, or Yellow (as in the Texas rose series)? -- My vote would be Autumn Gold and make it as dark as possible like the last 2blade run. If we had to limit our options, I would rather see Lignum Vitae and Natural Canvas and give up the smooth bone . The main reason I would pass on the smooth bone is because the outcome of the color is inconsistent. I think rotten banana was a mistake so recreating it would be difficult. The last run of 85's (my understanding) was supposed to be dark like the 77 2blade, but that didn't happen.

Anyway, just some more of my day dreaming of what I would want to see...

I'd like to echo the EO notch, would love to see one on a spear bladed #77. As far as covers go, I'd like to see the return of old tan saw cut and some more micarta!

Oh and I also like the sound of a saber grind
